Excellent insightful lectures about God

Dr. Donald A. Carson, the outstanding NT scholar who currently serves as the research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, gave a series of talks on the overview of the Bible, based on the topic of God. These talks form the content for the book, "The God Who Is There -- Finding Your Place in God's Story" (ISBN 978-0-8010-1372-0). (I would highly recommend you purchase the book when you purchase this DVD set -- it would be handy to have an NIV Bible as well). Dr. Carson's lectures (presented at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota) are very deep and insightful -- they are an excellent primer to the theology of God in the Old Testament and New Testament. Though these lectures were designed as an introductory course for people who are new to the Bible, the talks are very helpful in explaining the Scriptural teaching about God in the OT and NT; in addition, Dr. Carson blends in insights from psychology, philosophy, and science as well. I am so impressed with his wide breadth of knowledge. The lectures are very clearly presented (each session is 1 hour in length), and the TNIV text is shown when Dr. Carson reads from the Bible. The picture and sound quality are excellent.

I didn't want him to stop!

Quite often when I hear a preacher I acknowledge that what he is saying is true, but his manner of speaking, his physical bearing doesn't hold my attention. Don Carson in this DVD series does not come across as a preacher. He 'is' a teacher by profession. Yet he holds my attention in this series of "talks" in a way that is intellectually stimulating and also, I must use the word entertaining. For his method of teaching is physically animated. His body language often has me smiling, laughing now and then, while all the time he is massaging my heart and spirit which occasionally triggers my tear ducts.
I first bought his book by the same title before I discovered that the content of the book, in some places virtually word for word (and how does he do that!)is what makes up this DVD series. I must say I love Don Carson! He leaves me convinced that he "knows God," "is God's friend," and that he "loves God with all his heart!" That, for me, gives him a credibility that removes my skepticism.
I don't know how many of this series I have purchased as gifts for my children, my grandchildren, for friends locked into a sectarian religion and for non-believing neighbors and relatives. I do not know of a better gift for anyone, other than the Bible (which they may not read), than this series by Don Carson. You do not have to listen and view them in numerical order. In fact I often suggest people begin with the third DVD in the series. My wife and I watch this one repeatedly, never tiring!
I invite you to invest $16 and sit and listen and watch Donald Carson and see if you are not touched and moved in ways that no other professor or minister has done for you! I dare say you will agree with me that this series, as well as the book, is one of the finest gifts you could give yourself as well as those you care about the most!

If you haven't seen this; you are really missing out.
