About the Author
Ken Howard studied at Hornsey School of Art from 1949 to 1953 and at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1955 to 1958. He was elected Royal Academician in 1991.

More a collection of memories, than a life story

Ken Howard is one of my favourite painters, and every summer when I am in London I never fail to attend the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition to see the works he has entered. His use of light is absolutely magical. This autobiography gives the reader a sense of the man as opposed to the renowned painter. It illustrates the struggle a creative person faces when trying to focus and excel in a chosen art form, while at the same time trying to find a balance between the creative and interpersonal sides of life. Often a very steep price is paid as in the case of Mr. Howard's first marriage. The writing style is quite unsophisticated - more snippets of memory than a continuous story, and at times it becomes a little frustrating when the recollection of something is suddenly ended and he moves onto an unrelated topic. I would have liked him to write more about his work and how he has seen it evolve and develop. However, I am glad of the opportunity to get to "know" Ken Howard a little more.
