Barely scratches the surface
By Steve Benner
"Teach Yourself" books have come a long way since their beginnings way back in 1938. Originally focusing mostly on languages and mathematics, the range of subjects has grown to encompass just about ever subject and activity imaginable. The original rather dry and dusty academic cramming style of presentation has now given way to much lighter presentational styles, replete with jokey cartoons.
The latest rehashed series of "Teach Yourself ... in a Week" releases largely cover professional development subjects, each designed to deliver a concentrated daily dose of information and guidance that can easily be fitted into today's busy professional lifestyles. The format of all of the titles in the series is the same, with a chapter of introduction and preparation, followed by five further chapters which break the subject matter into manageable lumps, each building on the previous, and designed to be read quickly but thought about and considered carefully over the day. (And yes, you get the seventh day off.) At the end of each chapter, there is a 10-question multiple choice test to enable you to assess how well you have assimilated the material covered so far.
Compared with others in the series, such as "Teach Yourself Successful Negotiating in a Week", Mo Shapiro's "Teach Yourself Successful Neuro-linguistic Programming in a Week" is something of a disappointment. With a topic as vast and far-ranging as NLP, it is not surprising that this book does little more than scratch the surface of this field. I would not expect very much more from a book this slim; its six chapters provide a more than adequate whistle-stop introductory tour of NLP's basic concepts and jargon. Where it fails for me (and certainly fails in achieving the aim declared in its title) is its lack of any coherent direction, or any clear directive in how the techniques explained and described might actually be utilised. The author also oscillates between presenting NLP as a self-development tool and demonstrating its value as a managerial tool for the development of others. Whilst the techniques outlined in the book can doubtlessly be turned to either use with equal advantage, the focus in each case needs to be significantly different; switching between the two more or less at random frequently left me disoriented and confused with regard to just how any one of the techniques covered might most be of value.
The most striking illustration of its short-comings lies in the book's end-of-chapter "fact check" questions. In other books of this series, these are designed to enable the reader to assess how well the material presented so far has been understood and assimilated. In this volume, however, the questions do nothing more than test how attentively you have read the foregoing text (in chapter one, taking three questions to check that the reader knows what NLP is short for, for example). Nowhere do they stretch the reader's thinking into the subject matter; nor is it possible to mark one's answers in any quantitative manner, making it hard to assess just how well the questions have been answered!
For anyone who has maybe just heard of NLP and is interested in knowing what it comprises, this book provides as easy and gentle an introduction as one could wish for. The serious student will need to do a lot more studying, however, before they can hope to put very many of the techniques that NLP offers into practice.

You cannot become NLP fluent in a week.
By Shawn L Pearson
If you are looking for an introduction to NLP, this book is a decent shortcut. Don't however be fooled into thinking you will have anything resembling a coherent or even a close approximation of the necessary knowledge to use NLP. If you are already versed in NLP, this book is a fairly decent review. I had my wife read it, but she found it to be less than engrossing and found a book by Judy Bartkowiak to be more helpful.

Not Great
By J S Bach
I have read 1000's of books on the subject of success, business development, motivation, peak performance and wealth creation. I have been a business consultant, peak performance expert and motivational coach for a number of years. As such, I have read many good and extremely poor books in these subject matters.
I was sent this book as a part of the Amazon Vine programme and thought it would be a good book to read. NLP is a very interesting concept, used in essence to dispel negativity from the brain, which in turn allows the brain to focus on pre set goals and so achieve far more in life than otherwise would be the case....or so the theory goes. I have found uses for NLP in my consultancy work and I do consider some NLP techniques to be very useful to change our lives rapidly. One of the main problems with most NLP books, is that they can be very complex such as, Frogs Into Princes by Richard Bandler. This concise publication gives a great overview of NLP but shy's away from complex explanations of the theories behind NLP. The main idea of the book is that you can learn NLP by studying a chapter day over a week. Having read the book, the promise of the authors, to learn NLP in a week, is something that can be achieved. What this book will not do is give you a comprehensive knowledge of NLP in a week.
The content and ideas are great if you are looking for a brief and concise overview of NLP. This is not a book for the serious student of NLP. As such I can happily recommend this book for the beginner of NLP. If you are looking for a publication that looks at NLP in a more expansive way, whilst keeping the content concise, I would recommend the book NLP in 21 Days, which is a great book with a lot more detail.
Recommended for the beginner of NLP.
