I love the specific tips that are given in this book. Sure we all know some of them but seeing them in print, staring at you, makes them easier to put into practice.
Knowing something is not enough. You have to put it into practice to get any good out of it.
I got the title of this review from just one little passage in the book...
***"No matter what you have done or not done in the past, at any time, you can draw a line through your previous life and make the decision that your future is going to be different."***

Two other Tracy books that I also recommend are The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success and Advanced Selling Strategies: The Proven System of Sales Ideas, Methods, and Techniques Used by Top Salespeople Everywhere. The advice in them and this book can be applied by anybody although the books are mostly aimed for business owners or salesmen .

Just as Dan Kennedy's No BS time management book is mandatory if you want to get the most out of your time, this book is just as powerful when it comes to developing habits to follow throughout your business life.

I recommend this book for young adults just starting their careers, because it contains so much useful information about people skills, saving money and investing, being a top performer in the workplace, sales and marketing, leading a healthy lifestyle, starting your own business, and character and leadership. Tracy teaches time-proven principals of success in business, personal life, and finances. This book contains the habits of self-made millionaires. I wish I'd known many of these bits of wisdom when I started my career decades ago.

Rifaat Ebied is Foundation Professor of Semitic Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has published extensively in the field of Semitic Studies generally and on Christian Arabic and Syriac studies in particular, most recently Petri Callinicensis Patriarchae Antiocheni: Tractatus Contra Damianum (Louvain 1994/1996/1998/2003).

David Thomas, Ph.D. (1983) in Islamic Studies, University of Lancaster, is Reader in Christianity and Islam at the University of Birmingham. He has published extensively on Christian-Muslim relations, most recently Early Muslim Polemic against Christianity (Cambridge, 2002) and Christians at the Heart of Islamic Rule (Brill, 2003).

Medieval Bilingual Dialogue:

This volume comprises an Arabic edition with English translation of the Arabic response made by Damascene Islamic scholar Shams Ibn Ab� T�lib, a fourteenth century 'faquih', in response to a provocative letter from 'across Mediterrenian' Cypriot Christians. In his Letter, the Cypriot Christian eludes that the Qur'an does not contradict, but in fact affirms the Christian religion and its basic doctrines. the Moslem scholar elaborates in his comprehensive reply, in detailed and wide-ranging themes, rewriting earlier familiar polemical works, in a reply to Christian's letter, which was also sent to Ibn Taymiyya, a controversial Islamic contemporary. This response is thus a parallel to Ibn Taymiyya's (Al-jaw�b al-sah�h)*.

Note on Master of Jihad:

In his original book, (Aljawaab AlSaheeh)*;'The Correct Answer,' Ibn Tayymiya elaborated an encyclopedic answer,in 7 volumes, to many Christian polemics. Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328), well versed in Qur'anic studies, and scholastic theology, started giving fatwas on religious legal matters without following any of the four traditional legal schools, influenced by Ibn Hanbal. He was unyielding in his political and religious positions.

His jihad against the enemies of Islam, which he is now best known for, did not help him in his times, and he died in jail because of his daring opinions. Most notably, the Ibn Taymiyya writings were incorporated into Wahhabi doctrine in order to legitimize fighting anti-Islam as holy Jihad.

A Model Muslim/Christian Dialogue:

The development of Muslim christian interfaith dialogues, in the later medieval period is a good example of those polemics, is thus a rich source of information about the trends, attitudes, and rules of oral and written engagement.

The edition, in parallel Arabic versions and English translation presents in vivid account both parts of this correspondence, as a dialogue. The authors provide an elaborate introduction, detailed notes and commentary on the Arabic text rendered in a clear English translation.

A book as timeless as time: a clarion call for today!

The kindest words that can be used to describe "The Letter from the People of Cyprus" is to write that it is a polemic. It is a pathetic attempt of one religion to demean another, but without any substantive facts or original ideas. Ever since the Christian "universal [catholic] church" was established by the Emperor Constantine I in 325 CE at his summoned Council of Nicaea, the interfighting sects within the community that once relied on a human Jesus recodified in the later Bibles approved by the emperor, the goal of the Paulinistic Christians was to subordinate and destroy all other faiths. History was rewritten in the fourth century by the imperial bigots that pulled down temples and assassinated priests of religions that did not fall before the onslaught of those who transmogrified the Jesus found in the work of Mark, to create a field of hatred and draw lines of demarcations between faithful as well as separating women and men, making women subordinate (a role they had not played before) with the elevation of man to a rank near that of a god, to whom women should turn to for answers for all questions and duties. Fortunately, Ibn Abī Tālib al-Dimashqī had a superior education and was well-versed in his own source of piety that he responded carefully, encyclopedic in nature, to each of the weak arguments of the Christians of Cyprus, and exposed their weaknesses.

This volume is especially worthy as it gives parallel texts: Arabic and English, and for those who study the first five hundred years of emerging Paulinity, they will be able to see the difference between enflated self-righteousness with a solid rebuttal based on scholarship and critical thinking. Since no Roman pope or bishop was at the Council of Nicaea, a pecular but particular Greek event and meeting, the shouting of the ecclesiastical warriors was not available to buttress the Cyprian Christian attacks on early Islam. It was the Paulinic Christians decision to dramatize separations that did not exist but would lead the followers of Islam to realize that a fatwa was probable and the internal cleansing of jihad could break out into a full-scale battle.

Neither being Christian nor Muslim, I am able to appreciate and be taken aback by both sides, as the Christians and their Islamic counter take too much for granted based on unprovable faith--quite common in that day where religion fed on the festering sores of End Time fears and quest, especially among Christians, of a returning warrior god (transmogrifying Matthew 10:34 μη νομισητε οτι ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην επι την γην ουκ ηλθον βαλειν ειρηνην αλλα μαχαιραν) that does not appear in the base gospel of Mark, but gave credibility to the marshal movements of a church militant that still captivates and captures the thinking of numerous war-hungry religions for a "Final Battle" belched in the rantings of the madman of Potmos (John) that is a revision of Isaiah 17 predicting the never occuring fall of Damascus that neo-cons wished to realize in their pressuring Obama to war, without justification, against Syria. This book should be required reading.

Trotman's Truth?

Dawson Trotman died as heroically as he lived. He death was a testimony to his concern for others. Saving a sinking swimmer provides a picture of salvation.

This book is the story of Dawson and the Navigators an organization that to this day teaches discipleship and witnessing largely but not exclusively to the US military. The Navigators or Navs undoubtedly played a major role in the history of Christendom in the twentieth century both in and outside the USA.

The forward is a brief overview of the Navigators followed by chapters organized by scripture, Dawson's (Daws') journal entries, commentary which is then closed by a small prayer. The book is organized like a diagram used by the organization to teach. The Obedient Christian is a wheel powered with four spokes: prayer, witnessing, word, and prayer. The rim is the Obedient Christian which is powered by these four cartoon spokes. Daws often used drawings to illustrate ideas.

The bridge diagram used by Campus Crusade for Christ came from Daws. Drawings are featured in the journal entries that pepper this book. The book closes with some interesting articles by Daws. The article on scripture memorizing has inspired me to try to re-memorize the sixty verses I once knew in the Topical Memory System (TMS).

If you are interested in discipleship then this is a definite must read, Daws prose is sparse and efficient befitting his reputation as a businesslike chap. We are only treated here to a small selection of journal entries though leaving one to wonder what Daws said about other subjects. I wrote another review on a Daws book that was not well taken yet my motives are objective.

The book relates well as a devotional but it would have been interesting to relate it to the secular history of the organization and the challenges it faced with incorporation, the sudden fame from the Collier's article and the purchase of a former railway baron`s mansion known as The Glen. What decision making process went on with these events and were there factional disputes? We are left wondering. What about the current secularism of society and the military ? What the book gains with simplicity it looses with lack of perspective

It is still a useful and inspirational read.

A secular critical perspective would raise some interesting questions for Christians. Some points to ponder:

1.Secularism contradicts the concept of spiritual multiplication touted by Daws. The concept states that if you disciple "key men" they will in turn teach others and create exponential growth that would in a short time disciple the whole nation. Why did this key man concept not work? Analyzing the growth of the organization by year would shed light on this question. When did growth taper and why?

2. Is the key man concept really Biblical? Jesus chose disciples spiritually yet key men are often chosen on the basis of secular status. Francis Cole on page 44 was described as a "weakling" yet if he wasn't ideal for discipleship then was he adapted for something else? The Bible is clear that we are all critical parts of the Body, yet in the Navs non key men are often relegated to Bible study spectators or donators. Could the Navs use a witnessing cell with each group to spread the Gospel to compliment disciplship? Would it pay to disciple in soup kitchens? What about the poor? Are key men a form of exclusion in violation of the book of James? Just questions. Questions though that may be critical.

3. The purpose of The Glen is not mentioned yet one wonders if a conference center is any cheaper than renting? Could the excess money be used for witnessing? Could it be that The Glen was tied to egotism as much as a burden for the lost? Perhaps the humble origins of the Navigators in the Texaco station was a model that needed to be kept.

The point here is that this book leaves blank pages for every page answered. At home I have a copy of the Eleventh Party Day of the East German Communist Party (SED). The tract has glowing projections and a smiling picture of Comrade Honecker- the SED chief- on the front page. Written in 1986, Honecker could not foresee that by 1990 the SED would be part of history...oblivious to the world that had changed so much around socialism.

The Navs need to take heed of the fact that they are no longer part of the power structure and must begin a return to the Gospel. The twenty first century may become the first century again for our faith.

Great read!

This book is very well-written and tells the story of Dawson Trotman, which is fascinating, with a care that can only come from writers who genuinely admire Trotman. It a great quick read for anyone interested in growing closer to Jesus through the example of a well-respected and fascinating man of God!

Penetrating the Heart of Discipleship

At last we have a book that goes beyond the narrative of biography and the the glare of hagiography. An elite team of researchers has put together this book based on the journals of Dawson Trotman, founder of the Navigators. I have studied and practices discipleship for more than 50 years, but this book has given me the best insight yet into the process of making disciples for Jesus Christ.
