Prognosis: Poor: One Doctor's Personal Account of the Beauty and the Perils of Modern Medical Training, by Frances Southwick D.O

Prognosis: Poor is a poignant snapshot of one physician's medical training. Frances Southwick, D.O. explores the highs and lows (more often the lows) of the process of becoming a doctor. She delivers colorful detail inside the mind of one trainee, herself, through undergraduate school, medical school and residency. The book focuses most heavily on the capstone of family medicine training: three years of residency in a well-respected Pittsburgh hospital. Dr. Southwick courageously explores her most difficult moments of self-doubt and hopelessness, but wraps the text up with a chapter cataloguing current problems in the training process and how they might be remedied. This memoir highlights the problem of depression in physicians and physicians-in-training as a looming, large, current problem.

Honest, bold, eye-opening - a TRUE account of what it is really like to be a medicine resident.
By Becky
Simply put, I loved this book. I am writing this review from a Pharmacist perspective. Odd, right? I've worked at a Level I Trauma Center teaching hospital as the graveyard shift pharmacist for the last 7 years. I'm the one that gets the call at 02:00 AM from the desperate medicine resident who can't figure out how to order acetaminophen. I'm also the one that pages the intern on their 25th hour of call to let them know that they just entered a lethal dose of vecuronium into the computer system. If you "Google" my hospital's medical residency program, you'll see words like "malignant"; "tyranny", "intimidation". Let me just say, my hospital is nationally recognized. We are GOOD at what we do, and our expectation is to stay that way. BUT, I have seen first hand how poorly our medical/surgical residents are treated.
This book is a quick read and an imperative one for anyone considering becoming a doctor, going into/or currently in a residency program. Honestly, I've even recommended this book to my Pharmacist Interns that are considering a Pharmacist Residency and/or Fellowship. Dr. Southwick delves into subjects that no one else has really been brave enough to address - mental illness, suicide, extreme psychological stress. She does it SO WELL. She addresses the hard stuff and finds room to "keep it light". It is relatable even if you aren't in the medical field.
I hope this book ellicits change. I hope this book reaches a resident that just needs someone to tell them they are not alone. Right this moment, one of our medicine residents is admitted to my hospital for suicidal ideation. I am so glad someone finally had the courage to write about this aspect of residency training.

AllThat Glitters is Not Gold

For those who are contemplating a profession in medicine, this is a must read. Medical education is grueling physically and emotionally and financially expensive. For some, the cost may be too high. This biography, tells about one physician's journey in becoming a member of the The House of God. This book would be an excellent choice for a medical student or resident physician's book discussion group. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this biography and wish there were more resources to help those on this arduous journey of medical education. Thank you Dr. Southwick for sharing your story

A MUST READ!
By Miriam B. Harris
As a person who has spent her career in higher education, I read this book with interest. The story has some similar themes for those pursuing a PhD or EdD. When posing questions to doctoral committees about what felt like unreasonable expectations, the common response to a student has been, "I had to do it this way....so you must too." And, sadly, very little has changed.

I think this book should be required reading for all individuals considering a career in medicine, and for the faculty who are responsible for their medical training. Students are human beings, first and foremost, and should, from my perspective, be treated as such. The demands that faculty and staff currently place on doctors is inhumane, leading to some very sad outcomes, as Dr. Southwick illustrated in this book.
If many many individuals read this book, perhaps we'll form a groundswell of support for change. Such would be my wish.

My thanks to Dr. Southwick for making time in your full schedule to write this book. I'm most appreciative.

"In The Dance Claimed Me, we see Pearl Primus dancing a dance performed only by Watusi men. We see her electrifying performance at the first Negro rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where she became moon and prayer. Rain. Thunder. Light on the world stage. We feel the pulse of this twentieth century African-American woman claiming the dance of her people for all people and we chant Amen. Amen. A woman. A woman."—Sonia Sanchez, author of Morning Haiku (Sonia Sanchez)

"The Dance Claimed Me is at once an invaluable contribution to the cultural history of American dance as well as a scintillating account of an extraordinary life. As dancer, a force majeure; as choreographer, a culturally groundbreaking and influential innovator; as devotee and tireless teacher of traditional African cultural values, Mama Pearl Primus was the embodiment of black consciousness and womanhood at its very best. All of which emerges powerfully from these pages.”—Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, author of The Harder They Come

(Ekwueme Michael Thelwell)

"Peggy and Murray have taken the great, complicated life and legacy of Pearl Primus and given us a way to learn, breathe and feel Pearl's life journey. "A revelation of one woman’s life, a celebration of Black beauty, and a pleasure to read, The Dance Claimed Me is required reading for anyone interested in one 20th century Black woman trailblazer’s story."—Eisa Nefertari Ulen, The Crisis (Eisa Nefertari Ulen The Crisis)

"[This] biography reflects honest but compassionate insight into a towering artist who was not always easy to understand or work with. The Dance Claimed Me ably portrays Primus and the times and experiences that molded her—from racism and Red-baiting in America to a life-transforming, if sometimes unreliably welcoming, Africa. Regal, headstrong and as complex as only a driven genius can be, Primus can be credited with infusing the American dance stage with the profundities and subtleties of African ritual dance and music, influential if impossible to duplicate to perfection. I recommend this engrossing, poignant study of her life and contributions."—Eva Yaa Asantewaa, InfiniteBody Blog (InfiniteBody blog)

"The authors. . . create vivid descriptions of [Primus's] performances, and illuminate her pioneering work in merging African dance with modern dance innovation; they explore her charming but difficult personality with tact and grace. . . The photo section is particularly resonant: Primus in her prime, charisma and virtuosity shining through."—Judith Flanders, Times Literary Supplement (Judith Flanders Times Literary Supplement)

"The Dance Claimed Me captures the myriad experiences of an exceptional artist whose impact on the world of art and culture far exceeds the attention dance history scholars have given her prior to this book's publication....The reader is drawn into the evolving dynamics shaping the social, political, and aesthetic life of America and the world. Part of the book's overall achievement is that it shows, in brilliant detail, how so many of these changes were embodied in the life and art of Pearl Primus."—John Perpener III, Dance Chronicle (John Perpener III Dance Chronicle)

"Peggy and Murray Schwartz' loving biography… is informed by some 15 years of close friendship with Pearl in her later years, and brings to life her boldness, her complexity, and her passion." Bill Harpe, Dancing Times (Bill Harpe Dancing Times 2012-07-01)

"An extraordinary life story, told by Peggy and Murray Schwartz in a biography that warms the heart, lifts the spirit, and stimulates the mind."—Bill Harpe, Dancing Times
(Bill Harpe Dancing Times)

"The Dance Claimed Me is a highly personal biography, and the authors reveal, in their introduction and elsewhere in the book, the nature of their close relationship to the choreographer. One can sense the deep love that guides the writers as they set out to tell the story of Primus's life. The Dance Claimed Me brings Pearl Primus to life, revealing multiple dimensions of her world to new audiences."—Dance Research Journal (Dance Research Journal)

"As much a labour of love as it is a recovery project, The Dance Claimed Me communicates the Schwartzs’ sincere investment in securing Primus’s place in concert dance and US cultural history.…The authors strike a devotional tone that will probably resonate with many readers who admire the artist, and for whom this book represents the acknowledgement that Primus has always deserved but seldom received. There is no question that the book is an archival tour de force."—Rebekah Kowal, Performance Research (Rebekah Kowal Performance Research)

LOVE IT!
By Sharon
This book made me wish I could have seen Ms. Primus dance. I yearn to view footage, view photos, immerse myself in the dance that claimed Ms. Primus. I love this book. It positions this legend properly. Revealing her humanness. The complexity of her character, and the world she lived in. It is really a great read. I learned so much. Am grateful for the care, the honoring, the global history that threads the story.

Dr. Pearl Primus: The Dance Claimed Me.
By Edward W Primus
I gave this rating as I am the Nephew of Dr. Primus. I found the book very informative but I also found certain materials that didn't seem to be based in fact due to what I know of the family history on my Father's side who was her brother. I also feel that there were numerous intrusions of other voices that if you read carefully are marginal to Dr. Primus story. I would recommend the book to others in fact I am sending this copy to a friend in Japan who is interested in my Late Aunt's life. I am aware that there is a lot more material that is held by people about my Late Aunt and I am doing research to bring this information to light.

Inspirational!
By Sarah V. MccOrmick
This biography was tremendous! Peggy and Murray Schwartz truly loved writing about this amazing woman. A perfect marriage of academic inquiry and artistry. I loved reading about Pearl Primus' love of dance, love of African dance, and what it meant to her. The cover image alone should tell you that she had to have been an inspirational dancer. I really wish I could have seen her perform, but this book allowed me to envision her move, think, and feel. In reading this, I learned of Pearl Primus' courage, creativity, and intelligence.

My guess is that it will be widely consulted not only by transpersonal psychotherapists but also by psychotherapists of other orientations who are open to the spiritual dimension of the psychotherapeutic process." --Michael Washburn, author of The Ego and the Dynamic Ground, Transpersonal Psychology in Psychoanalytic Perspective
"Cortright brings together the disparate elements of transpersonal psychology in a way that is unique and profound. I know of no other work that so compellingly summarizes the progress and controversies within this groundbreaking discipline." -- John E. Nelson, M.D., author of Healing the Split: Integrating Spirit Into Our Understanding of the Mentally Ill
"This material is central in the training of transpersonal therapists and in the continuing education of more traditionally oriented psychotherapists. Clearly the author's convictions and experience inspire the book, and it will resonate with other clinicians attempting to do transpersonal therapy." -- Arlene Mazak, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology

Outstanding presentation. Excellent as a college text.
By Roy Drake, SJ (ARDIFORD@WORLDNET.ATT.NET)
This book, Psychotherapy and Spirit, by Brant Cortright, is among the finest surveys of the field of transpersonal psychology. Any college professor seeking to teach this discipline would do well to examine this as a possible textbook. It treats the topic in clear articulate language, presenting in a balanced manner the sometimes opposing positions of Wilber and Washburn. The author presents the theory of transpersonal psychology as it evolved in the recent past, giving excellent synopsis of the contributions of Wilber, Washburn, Groff, Assignioli, Walsh and Vaughn, among others. The section on clinical issues is a significant contribution to the clarification of paths of spiritual growth and their therapeutic significance. The chapter on Spiritual Emergency builds on the work of Nelson (Healing the Split, 1990) and develops it with a view to psychoanalytic praxis. Anyone treating clients in a spiritual-psychological crisis will be grateful for the clear guidelines presented here. Having read many of the current books in the area, I feel that this is among the best

Great Book
By Daryl Paulson
Cortright has taken a psychotherapeutic perspective on transpersonal psychology and has done a great job. Perhaps some of the negative reviews of this book are grounded in him not idolizing Ken Wilber. Wilber is a theorist and not a therapist so what Cortright presents is grounded in truth. He does not attempt to dethrone Wilber however. The book is grounded in solid evidence and will be a contribution to anyone interested in the solid core of transpersonal psychotherapy. He also does a great job in reviewing some of the past transpersonal founders such as Roberto Assagioli.

a brave but flawed attempt at unifying transpersonal thought
By A Customer
Brant Cortright does a good job of surveying 3 decades of transpersonal psychology. He felt that it was high time to bring a critical perspective to this field and he has decided to spearhead it. There quite a bit of the textbook quality about it which one would expect from the Director of the California Institue of Integrative Studies. He does a great job of incisive writing without engaging too much in reductionism. I like his writing best when it was anectdotal.Stories about Maslow and Rinpoche really showed the difference between text and person and the imporatance of keeping them separate. The overall thrust of the book attempts to show how consciousness and spirituality are the keynotes in transpersonal psychology and practice. In the final analysis though Cortright sticks to the time honored schism of church and state when comparing therapist and priest. The only problem with this distancing of the therapist's spirituality is that Cortright does not define what a priest or minister actually does(besides the dognmatizing) compared to a transpersonal therapist. After criticizing psychiatry and its' pathological model, he ultimately hides behind a barrier of professionalism thus distancing himself from a deeper discussion of ethical and moral issues. He does this by becoming old fashioned and sensible around the values of tradition in psychiatry. "Most transpersonal therapists would not teach a client any spiritual philosophy much in keeping with standard therapeutic tradition." (p.221) He also singles out Psychosynthesis for some pretty dismissive commentary while holding up others like Hameed Ali. This is quite a serious contradiction but I'm sure that it reflects a bias deeper than he wants to share with us.So, after spending the whole book talking about spirituality as the cornerstone in the Fourth Force of Psychology, he warns that it is not possible really to integrate this in the real world. Workshps or retreats possibly but not your everyday third part covered therapy. That is where the spirit in "Psychotherapy and Spirit" fizzles. Too bad becasue for the most part it was a damned good read.

Taking-Place: Non-Representational Theories and Geography, by Ben Anderson

Emerging over the past ten years from a set of post-structuralist theoretical lineages, non-representational theories are having a major impact within Human Geography. Non-representational theorisation and research has opened up new sets of problematics around the body, practice and performativity and inspired new ways of doing and writing human geography that aim to engage with the taking-place of everyday life. Drawing together a range of innovative contributions from leading writers, this is the first book to provide an extensive and in-depth overview of non-representational theories and human geography. The work addresses the core themes of this still-developing field, demonstrates the implications of non-representational theories for many aspects of human geographic thought and practice, and highlights areas of emergent critical debate. The collection is structured around four thematic sections - Life, Representation, Ethics and Politics - which explore the varied relations between non-representational theories and contemporary human geography.

Review
'Non-representational theories have exercised the discipline more than most in the first decade of the 21st century. This collection provides insights into what moved a generation of geographers to experiment with this style of work, and where such experimentation might still lead.' Sarah J. Whatmore, University of Oxford, UK 'I read the manuscript of this book in two (long) sittings. I felt impelled to do so, to keep turning the pages. I was excited, moved, surprised, inspired; but always learning, sensing possibilities for thought-and-action leading me far from my academic comfort zone. As a gathering together of the remarkable intellectual and creative energies released by non-representational theory, this volume is a mightily impressive achievement where the multiple "rough grounds" of bodies, lives, events, movements, relations and spaces are allowed to challenge singular constructs of nature, society, politics, ethics, the human and the future. The volume serves simultaneously as a work of exposition and experiment, a rejoinder to critics, an elaboration of further paths, and a generous affirmation of responding geographically to more-than-representational worlds.' Chris Philo, University of Glasgow, UK 'Taking Place is a beautifully illustrated map of the most interesting work being pursued in geography today. It explores what nature, culture, language, and ethics can become once "social constructivism" has to share the bill with a variety of new materialisms. The book is a wonderful resource for political theorists, ethnographers, urbanists, ecophilosophers, and anyone interested in the strange magic of the encounter between things, events, places, and our accounts of them' Jane Bennett, The Johns Hopkins University, USA 'Taking-Place will be a valuable starting point for those curious about non-representational theories in geography. It also offers much in the way of new ideas and inspiration for those already fascinated by this field.' New Zealand Geographer 'The strength of this collection is the clear purpose expressed in the writing. The various authors are taking subjectivity seriously and trying to address many of the concerns expressed against NRT more generally.' Antipode

Alien Interaction Trilogy - Communications with Extraterrestrials by Paul Hamden
By Claire O'Regan
This is the most inspiring book I have ever read. This trilogy gives clear insight into who we are, where we came from & where we go next. In part one of the trilogy there are techniques to help & guide with meditation. This can be used as a handbook. This book has taught me that meditation is key to balance. Through meditation we can learn who we really are & begin an incredible journey to finding that ultimate feeling we are all looking for.
We should all do one thing for ourselves each day. If we could just stop for 10 minutes & look within we would quickly realise, that all we are searching for, is right here literally behind our eyelids.
If you have never meditated then this book also teaches you how to meditate & is also great for the person more advanced in meditation.
I highly recommend this Trilogy to all. Enjoy!

Complete Recipe for Engineering Experimentation
By Wonshik Chee
I have reviewed several books in engineering experimentation to adopt one of them to my course. Among them, this book is most complete and provides lots of useful information nicely organized. One of the strengthes this book provides is the "recipe" for various enigneering experiments with excellent summary.

really bad book. the book has a lot of examples ...
By johnny perez
really bad book. the book has a lot of examples of engineering device uses or measurements but almost no explanation on most of them. also, the book will send you to other examples in one chapter from another chapter. when doing homework the book offers no help and the solution manual is even worse. the class itself is extremely easy but this book sucks at doing anything, especially since there is a lot of errors in this book. if your like me, then all the material covered in this book has already been covered in all your other classes and as such it will be review from past classes.

Whose Justice? Which Rationality?, by Alasdair MacIntyre

Whose Justice? Which Rationality?, the sequel to After Virtue, is a persuasive argument of there not being rationality that is not the rationality of some tradition. MacIntyre examines the problems presented by the existence of rival traditions of inquiry in the cases of four major philosophers: Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, and Hume.

From Publishers Weekly
Is there any cause or war worth risking one's life for? How can we determine which actions are vices and which virtues? MacIntyre, professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt University, unravels these and other such questions by linking the concept of justice to what he calls practical rationality. He rejects the grab-what-you-can, utilitarian yardstick adopted by moral relativists. Instead, he argues that four wholly different, incompatible ideas of justiceput forth by Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas and Humehave helped shape our modern individualistic world. In his unorthodox view, each person seeks the good through an ongoing dialogue with one of these traditions or within Jewish, non-Western or other historical traditions. This weighty sequel to After Virtue (1981) is certain to stir debate.
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In this sequel to After Virtue ( LJ 9/15/81), MacIntyre contends that any rational justification of moral judgments must presuppose some particular tradition's conception of rationality. He illustrates his contention by examining four philosophersAristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, and Humeto show how their different views about justice and practical rationality derive from different sources. MacIntyre asserts that although a tradition may fail by its own standards, the answer to any question about justice depends upon the historical, social, and cultural situation of the respondent and upon how he sees himself. The book's historical analyses are clear and stimulating, but the arguments for its own thesis are cloudy and ineffectual.Robert Hoffman, York Coll., CUNY

Review
“MacIntyre is widely informed and his story of developments in the traditions that he identifies is learned, interesting, and notably well-written.” —London Review of Books

“Alasdair MacIntyre has done it again. Here [he] delivers on his promise in After Virtue to develop an account of rationality and justice that is tradition specific. . . . What is so remarkable about MacIntyre’s achievement is his ability to combine close historical analysis with philosophical argumentation while never losing his narrative line. . . . His analysis illumines our situation in an extraordinary manner.” —Commonweal

“MacIntyre is a master of the history of ideas. . . . [He] helps us to understand why so many people are stymied today in articulating beliefs that underlie their traditions of inquiry, practice, and public discourse.” —Commentary

“[MacIntyre’s] diagnosis of what ails recent moral philosophy is brilliant.” —Wilson Quarterly

“MacIntyre’s rich historical exposition displays all the erudition and philosophical subtlety that his readers have come to expect from his work. . . . [T]here is much to admire in MacIntyre’s unflinching indictment of liberal modernity.” —The New Criterion

Read "After Virtue" first, then...
By EJTV
I didn't find this book as engaging as "After Virtue." If you have not read "After Virtue," I would start there first, and then move to "Three Rival Versions of Moral Inquiry" and then to "Dependent Rational Animals." If you want more, then move to "Whose Justice? Which Rationality?" My bias is classical liberal, pro-market and anti-state, but always with tension with a more communitarian/Thomistic approach which MacIntyre gives. He does not get economics, however, and true to his Marxist roots, for example, he indicates that Aquinas "held a version of the labor theory of value," that the Summa to support that "exorbitant prices" are theft, that capitalism is incompatible with St. Thomas, in pp.199-200. In truth, Aquinas has a rudimentary understanding of prices as being the result of the subjective value of the buyer, an idea later fully developed by his followers, the Late Scholastics of Salamanca. Still, you will find great Thomistic nuggets in "Whose Justice? Which Rationality?"

Excellent, must read follow up to After Virtue. Adding another twenty required words to this review will not make either the review or the book any better than it already is.

A major work of contemporary philosophy

This is a review of _Whose Justice? Which Rationality?_ by Alasdair MacIntyre.
This is a very challenging book to read, but also one that will deepen your thinking about the world, whether you agree with it or not.
We largely take it for granted that (1) people disagree significantly about a wide range of issues related to ethics, and that (2) people do not agree about enough standards of rationality to resolve these ethical disagreements. MacIntyre puts this by saying that "logical incompatibility and incommensurability" both obtain (p. 351). What conclusion should we draw from these facts? One common response is relativism, which is roughly the view that the truth or falsity of a claim depends on the perspective from which it is evaluated. However, MacIntyre argues against relativism based on a brilliant reinterpretation of several major Western philosophical traditions.
The Western Englightenment (of which Descartes is paradigmatic), rejected appeals to tradition, canonical texts and authority, and attempted to put in their place the "appeal to principles undeniable by any rational person," and hence independent of culture, history, etc. "Yet both the thinkers of the Enlightenment and their successors proved unable to agree as to what precisely those principles were which could be found undeniable by all rational persons" (p. 6). Since the Enlightenment, most Western thinkers have either (1) continued to search for principles that are universally acceptable to all minimally rational humans (and continued to fail in this quest), or (2) given up on the quest for universal principles of reason, but -- paradoxically -- continued to assume the Enlightenment prejudice that any rational justification would have to be universal, ahistorical, and acultural.
MacIntyre suggests that neither approach has learned the lesson of the failure of the Enlightenment project, which is that any rational justification has to be parochial, historical and in a particular cultural context.
Since rational justification must be historical, the bearers of justification are not "theories" in the abstract, but embodied traditions. MacIntyre examines four sample traditions in this book (although he admits there are many more): the Aristotelian-Thomistic, the Augustinean, and those of the "Scottish Enlightenment" and modern liberalism.
Traditions like these can undergo "epistemological crises": situations in which a tradition, by its own standards, increasingly discloses "new inadequacies, hitherto unrecognized incoherences, and new problems for the solution of which there seem to be insufficient or no resources within the established fabric of belief" (p. 362). A tradition may find a way to survive such a crisis (as Thomas Aquinas helped Christianity to do by synthesizing Augustineanism and Aristotelianism), but it may also fail. And because the possibility of failure is there, relativism is false: a tradition can come to see that its claims are false even by its own standards.
Even if my tradition is not in an obvious crisis, I can realize that I have a rational justification for rejecting or modifying it. Suppose I am confronted with an alien intellectual tradition which is both incompatible and incommensurable with my own. Because the two are incompatible, I cannot simply agree with both traditions. But because of incommensurability, I cannot directly convince the adherents of the rival tradition that they are wrong (nor can they directly convince me). I can, however, learn to be "bilingual" in the two traditions. The Aristotelian can learn, for example, to "speak Confucian," as it were. Having done so, he occupies a special perspective, from which he may conclude that the Confucian worldview offers a superior interpretation of the strengths and weaknesses of his own tradition. Or he may conclude the opposite. Or he may conclude that some sort of synthesis is possible, which is superior to either one individually. For this reason also, relativism is not true, despite the fact that traditions are, when speaking one to the other, incommensurable: someone occupying one tradition *can* see that his views are fundamentally mistaken.
MacIntyre argues that, of the four traditions he considers in this book, three have entered inescapable epistemological crises, while one (the tradition of Thomas Aquinas) has answered all challenges so far. The bulk of the book is a history of the four traditions. If you want to get the outline of MacIntyre's view, I recommend chapters 1 (the intro), 7-8 (on Aristotle), 9 (on Augustine), 10-11 (on Aquinas's synthesis), 16 (on Hume), 17 (on liberalism), and 18-20 (MacIntyre's grand theory).
This is, of course, an easier book to read if you have read some previous philosophy (Thomas Kuhn's _The Structure of Scientific Revolutions_ is in the background of much of what MacIntyre says, even though he doesn't cite Kuhn very often), but a bright, motivated non-philosopher can read and greatly enjoy this book too.
