The best?

Not only is it the sole detailed reference book on this comprehensive subject, I'm sure it would be the best if there were ten others.
I have worked in the industry for 34 years and have not only recommemded it to many, but purchased it a a gift for consultants, generating set agents and dealers.
The only problem I have had is getting it back when someone has borrowed it!

The best generator reference book

This has to be the best generator reference book I have ever read. It is very detailed and filled with lots of information on electrical generation. I used this book as a study guide for my generator plant operators license and I aced the test. This is a must have for anybody involved in power generation operation.

Really good book!

I really enjoyed this book. Everyone in Katelyn's family is in the Police department. She feels she has to work twice as hard as her brothers to make promotion. She is trying to make sergeant before her 29th birthday. Katelyn goes undercover to try to stop the killer that is killing newlyweds. I love the way she meets her new boss... Her new boss is also undercover, and she suspects him, so she pulls him to the side and frisk him for weapons at a wedding. She is embarrassed when she finds out he is a policeman, and mortified to find out he is her new boss. Later they get paired together, posing together as lovers. This book had lots of action, and romance. This book was hard to put down!

Ryland had pitted him against not just Bryden but the entire O'Malley clan - including Katelyn. Yet it hadn't kept them apart. Of course, probably nothing short of critical injury or death could have done that. There were times, like now, when Joe felt as if he were in the path of a speeding train, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Nothing he wanted to do to stop it. Talk about confusing. They had a killer to catch, and his every other thought was of the redhead he'd left in the conference room. She deserved better than that and so did the victims.

Veiled intentions

I loved how the two main charters meet they instantly dislike each other and are at odds with each other but do to there different styles of how they handle a crisis they are thrown together and learn to work together and fall in love too plus it's cutie how they slowly except there feelings for each other and how they handle them. It's got lots of action drama and great chapters I really enjoy the brothers and sister relationships between the Omally clan

The story starts out with Katelyn O'Malley and includes her two brothers, Brayden and Garrett [due out in 2/05].

Katelyn is bound and determined to find the sniper that is killing newly-weds. She has an agenda to make Sargeant before she is 29. [Like her brothers]

Sargeant Joe Rico is newly appointed to the Homicide Squad and Katelyn's new boss. He is also investigating allegations against Brayden, who has not completely recovered from his wife's death.

Both Katelyn and her brother, Sargeant Garrett O'Malley of Special Investigations warn Joe against hurting Brayden.

[loved the way Katelyn meets her new boss] Rico finds out that Katelyn has set up a cover with a marriage broker and low and behold they seemed to be matched up. They have to go undercover together.

Well, I was greatly disappointed in this character. She sure did not have any moral inclinations, admiting to other lovers before Joe. Their romps through the pages became a little too much for the story. Yuck!

On the whole the story was very good - characters leave a bit to be desired but what can you expect of the [broads] females of this day and age.

Read only to complete the O'Malley stories [but you won't miss much] #2, Brayden's story is much better in a way.

About the Author

Annabel Ness Evans received her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Alberta. She is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Concordia University College of Alberta. She teaches courses in statistics and directs the B.A. programs in psychology. Her other books are Principles of Behavior Analysis, co-authored with Lyle Grant (PH, 1994) and Methods in Psychological Research, Third Edition (SAGE, 2013). She also does outside consulting which includes graphic design and statistical analysis.

Bryan J. Rooney received his Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology from Carleton University in 1994. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Concordia University College of Alberta, where he began teaching while a Ph.D. candidate in 1995. In addition to his work at Concordia, he also teaches at the University of Alberta and does statistical and research consulting and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity. He regularly teaches the introductory Research Methods and Statistics courses as well as courses on Introductory Psychology, Brain & Behavior, Sensation and Perception, and Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. He is an active member of APA Division 2 (Society for the Teaching of Psychology), the Society for Neuroscience, the Canadian Society for Brain, Behavior & Cognitive Science, and the International Brain Research Organization.

Poor quality and structure

I am currently using this text for a 300 level course and it is very disappointing. The text is structured so poorly that it does not lend well to the learning process. The chapters are organized in a way that does not build upon the previous one. The information that is vital to conducting social science research is not well thought out or comprehensive. I may be bias because I am used to text that are very structured and build upon each chapter. Currently my instructor has to take the material and add or subtract information with makes learning difficult. My professor has stated that he will not be using this text in the future thankfully. It just is not anywhere near 300 college level material :-( If you can find a used copy or rent I strongly recommend doing so as it is not worth the cost of purchasing.

John H. Evans is professor of sociology at the University of California, San Diego. He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and Yale, Edinburgh, and Muenster Universities. I found the history of the theologian in bioethics consultation, policy making something to contemplate as chaplains currently redefine their own roles in healthcare. It's encouraging to know where we have been because from there we know where we might go forward to. I believe this is a good read for board certified chaplains who are members of hospital bioethics teams.

Wonderful book that needs to be in every church library

This small, charming book, so well written that it will hold the interest of every twelve year old, and every hundred and two year old, should be in every church library. Oh yes, and in your own library.

Ruffin investigates all the information we have about what happened to each of the apostles after Christ ascended. Thomas, the apostle who doubted, "is frequently imagined as a dour, pessimistic man" (p 120), even though there are very few mentions of Thomas in the gospels.

Yet, "We know more about the life of Thomas after Calvary than we do about any of the other apostles except for Peter and John" (p 120). Thomas was instrumental in the conversion of Prince Abgar the Black. But he kept traveling, through Turkey and Armenia and into India.

There is actually a Syrian document that talks about Thomas in India, called "The Acts of Thomas", which dates to about 200 AD. "The inhabitants of the Malabar Coast of India...have many traditions about Thomas (p 131). One such story relates how Thomas raised a dead boy to life.

Lots of fascinating nuggets of information, and an enjoyable book to read.

The Twelve Apostles of Christ.

_The Twelve: The Lives of the Apostles After Calvary_ is an interesting book by a Catholic author, C. Bernard Ruffin. It catalogues the lives, travels and evangelical exploits of the twelve apostles from the New Testament, the writings of the Fathers and various apocryphal historical novels. The first problem about writing about the apostles, as Ruffin explains, is to differentiate between "the disciples," "the apostles" and "the Twelve." Disciple refers to any full-fledged follower of Christ and especially to the seventy (or seventy-two) missionaries sent to the villages of Judea during Christ's lifetime. Apostle refers to a special office within the Church that was instituted by Christ to officially declare the Gospel and later on ordain bishops, deacons and presbyters. "The Twelve" encompasses the twelve men explicitly named in the Gospels as those whom Jesus called and taught during his lifetime in this world. A number of saints in Christian history, notably St. Paul, have attained the status of "apostle" or "equal to the apostles" even though they were obviously not in Christ's original entourage. Ruffin does not address the issue of why twelve were called, but it is obviously an Old Testament metaphor of the Twelve Tribes of Israel who originated from Jacob (Israel) and his twelve sons. A problem exists in identifying exactly who the Twelve were because many of them went by multiple names and many figures in the New Testament shared the same name. Ruffin provides an authoritative list: Peter, Andrew, James the Greater, James the Less, John, Philip, Bartholomew (a.k.a. Nathaniel), Thomas, Matthew, Simon, Jude (a.k.a. Thaddeus), and Judas Iscariot whose place was later filled by Matthias. James the Greater and James the Less are both to be distinguished from James the Righteous who was Bishop of Jerusalem and author of the Epistle of James. Most suffered martyrdom for Christ having lived lengthy lives spreading the Gospel of Christ, except for John who died of an illness in old age. Peter of course founded the episcopacy of Rome and Andrew at Constantinople. Many were active in Judea, Syria, Asia Minor, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Some of the apostles are held to have traveled as far as Britain, Iran/Persia, Ethiopia, Armenia, Scythia/southern Russia, Spain, India and even China and Southeast Asia. The most extensive traditions exist regarding "Doubting Thomas." He is reputed to have traveled to the Punjab region of India, southward along the Malabar Coast and onward to what is today Burma and Malaysia. Thomas is considered the founder of the Indian Orthodox Church dating back to the first century. Ruffin examines the status and motives of Judas and what made him a traitor to Christ. More space in this book is devoted to Peter than to the other apostles and in some instances Ruffin argues for an interpretation of the New Testament accounts of Peter in order to justify papal supremacy over the Church. However, this book remains an excellent, easy to read introduction to early traditions regarding the apostles and their mission to the ends of the earth.

A worthwhile read- FOUR stars

Unfortunately Amazon won't let me change my preliminary rating of this worthy book to four stars.

I initially had qualms about this book. As others have pointed out, the author, who according to the book jacket writes for Our Sunday Visitor, which apparently is a Catholic juvenile newsletter, occasionally peppers the text with Catholic interpretations. But Ruffn gets points for often giving a fair viewing of both sides of controversial ecclesial issues. For instance, regarding the contested familial nature of the "brothers" of Jesus, he concludes his discussion by citing the view that, linguistics aside, these men being brothers germane would not be at issue except for the Catholic doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary.

Early on I came across one bit of sloppy narrative, which did not engender confidence. Ruffin has Peter telling the Sanhedrin about an angel releasing the Twelve from prison and telling them to return preaching in the temple (p 42). But the book of Acts, our only source document on this event, says no such thing. Indeed, it seems a bit whimsical that it's not recorded that the Jewish elders ask the apostles how they got out of prison. One senses that they were afraid to ask! But that's speculation on my part - and that's the point. Where the text is silent we should be also, or we should notify the reader that we've departed the source text.

That said, as I continued reading I found the book interesting and edifying. It gives insight into the chronology of the Gospel accounts, and it gathers an impressive amount of research into extrabiblical sources, mostly early church fathers, regarding the possible exploits of the original Twelve.

I say "possible" because it is striking how thin a gruel the extrabiblical witness in these matters is. Very often our knowledge of the apostles quickly degenerates into speculation, fanciful tales, and conflicting claims once we leave the sacred text. It's too bad that so much of this information has been lost, considering the dynamic nature of the spread of the early church. We should be thankful that the Scriptures themselves have been preserved so well.

Ironically, I found the most compelling writing in the book to be centered around the fallen apostle Judas. The examination of who he was, what may have motivated his actions, and the depths to which he fell was illuminating. And the contrast made between Ruffin's orthodox insight into this matter and the humanist view of the poet Longfellow was well done.

As I read this book the ecclesiology of the early church was never far from my thoughts. It's a wonderment, and not a pleasant one, how the church migrated from its early dynamic loose nature to one of hardened divisions and indeed cruel internecine bloodletting. My fervent hope is that despite differences on lesser points, we come to the unity of faith for which Jesus prayed and offered Himself. Maybe a better understanding of the acts and motivations of the first apostles will help us recapture the spirit of those glorious early days. For only in unity will the church regain the power to become the true witness it still is intended to be.

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding," according to the author's own foreword, recalls the pleasurable Christmases of her own at her brother-in-law's home (Abney Hall) in the north of England. Christie was enchanted by huge country house Christmases that included stockings at the bed in the morning, the Church service with all the Christmas hymns, a dinner of gargantuan proportions, presents, and the final Lighting of the Tree. Even in her older years, this was still a wonderful memory to her so she dedicated this book to the hostess who gave her such fond memories. In this tale Poirot experiences these same treats as he pursues a red ruby stolen by a young woman who has stolen it and the affections of a prince betrothed to a woman in his own country. In a secondary plot, the master sleuth also manages to intervene in the romance of his host's granddaughter and avert a practical joke in the form of a mock murder.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest," is a longer version of "The Mystery of the Baghdad Chest," originally published in 1939. In this Poirot and his erstwhile companion Hastings become involved in the murder of a man whose stabbed body is found stuffed inside the elaborate chest of a man rumored to be the lover of the dead man's wife.

"The Under Dog," originally published in 1951, concerns Lily Margrave, paid companion to Lady Astwell. She seeks Poirot's help in solving the murder of her employer's husband who has been killed in the tower of his estate. Though all circumstances point to a nephew who has argued with the deceased, the widow is sure someone else killed her husband.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds," originally published in 1950, is the tale of a murder concerning eating habits. While dining one evening, Poirot notices a lone man whom he discovers has been eating at this restaurant every Tuesday and Thursday night for a decade. When he learns the diner came in on Monday night the week before, his little gray cells are activated and he is soon on the trail of a murder.

"The Dream," originally published in 1939, features a reclusive and eccentric millionaire who summons Poirot to his home to interpret his recurring nightmare of committing suicide. An usual request for the dapper detective, but one which he handles with aplomb.

"Greenshaw's Folly" had appeared previously in a magazine in 1957 but this is its first publication in book form. It is also the lone Miss Marple story in this collection. Raymond West, Miss Marple's novelist nephew, is travelling with a literary critic whose hobby is collecting architectural monstrosities on film. The two visit Greenshaw's Folly, a hideous Victorian mansion now occupied by Miss Greenshaw, a spinster who is the last of the Greenshaw family. West arranges for his wife's niece to help Miss Greenshaw edit her grandfather's diaries and while doing so, the niece witnesses the brutal murder-by-arrow of Miss Greenshaw. The gardener, an avid archery buff, is accused, but it will take Miss Marple's acute perceptions of people to solve this murder.

"Don't Eat None of the Plum Pudding..."

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" may not be the most auspicious title for an Agatha Christie novel, particularly when one takes into account her tendency for high body counts and gory deaths, but the subtitle "and a selection of entrees" reveals Christie's intentions for this particular short-story anthology. "Christmas Pudding" is just a bit of fun, dedicated to the memory of her Christmases spent as a child at her brother-in-law's house.

The six stories here are long enough to be described as novellas, with the first five starring Christie's most famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the sixth featuring her spinster sleuth Miss Jane Marple. All the stories are vintage Christie, though they contain more of a romantic air this time around, with stories that feature stolen rubies, Spanish chests, precognitive dreams, hypnotism, tower rooms, and old run-down estates.

In "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" Hercule Poirot is called away from his cozy winter apartment in order to spend Christmas with the Lacey family. The police have reason to believe that the priceless ruby, stolen from a foolish Indian prince, will turn up in this particular household. Begrudgingly, Poirot accepts the invitation and is introduced to the Lacey family - which includes a group of children who plan a "murder" for their guest. It doesn't take a stroke of genius to guess where the missing ruby ends up. All that Poirot has to deduce is how it got there, and how the children can help in the capture of the culprit.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" deals with the gruesome discovery of a body inside the titular chest. Mr Clayton was stabled to death at some point during a soiree taking place at Major Rich's apartment, at the same time he was meant to have been called away to Scotland on business. All the evidence points to Major Rich, especially since he's in love with Mr Clayton's beautiful wife Margharita - but Poirot is not so convinced he's the murderer. Perhaps Shakespeare's "Othello" holds the key...

A lady's companion's reluctance in summoning Poirot to a murder scene only piques his interest in the case, and he travels to the house of the Astwells to investigate the death of the bad-tempered Sir Rueben Astwell. Once again, there is a suspect to whom all the evidence points, but the victim's wife insists that it was her husband's secretary that is responsible - her intuition is never wrong! But the case itself seems clueless, and Poirot has to resort to several psychological games in order to unearth the murderer.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds" and "The Dream" are the two shortest stories in the anthology, and the most simplistic. In the first Poirot is intrigued over the tale of a long-time patron at a certain restaurant suddenly changing his dinner order for no discernable reason, something casts suspicion over his death a few days later; in the latter Poirot is summoned to a wealthy businessman's office in order to discuss the precognitive power of dreams. Benedict Farley has been having a reoccurring dream each night in which he shoots himself in the head at exactly twenty-eight minutes past three. Poirot is at a loss to explain the phenomena to his client, but sure enough, Mr Farley commits suicide just a few days later. Did the dream come true, or was something even more sinister at work?

Finally, "Greenshaw's Folly" moves from Mr Poirot to Miss Marple. Whilst staying with her nephew Raymond West, Miss Marple gets a secondhand account from his wife of the strange occurrences at Greenshaw's Folly, the ramshackle old estate that bankrupted its original owner. With something of a turf war going on between the housekeeper and the gardening boy, Mrs West tries to keep her head down as she organizes old Mrs Greenshaw's memoirs. To her horror she is witness to the old woman's murder, watching helplessly from within a locked room as Mrs Greenshaw is shot dead with an arrow. All possible suspects have an alibi - so whodunit?

These are not Christie's finest by any means. The culprit of "Christmas Pudding" is so obvious that it becomes a case of how rather than who, and Miss Marple's solution to "Greenshaw" seems to have been pulled out of a hat. But you can tell that Christie had a lot of fun with these particular mysteries, especially the first, where the warmth and fun of a typical English Christmas has been drawn straight out of her own memories. There are numerous cameos from various side-characters, including Miss Lemon the efficient secretary, George the devoted manservant, Raymond West the successful novelist and Doctor Stillingfleet (who pops up again in Third Girl), and because of the relative simplicity of the plots, many readers may find that Christie is unable to pull a fast one on them - so long as they pay careful attention to the clues.

This book is well worth reading if you are a fan of Agatha Christies, Hercule Poirot. Poirots first taste of a traditional English Christmas ends in him solving the disappearance of a Princes ruby. After recieving a sinister note warning him not to eat the Christmas Pudding, a mysterious visitor in the night and his host nearly choking on the Christmas Pudding he sets a trap for his suspect and a joke on the children of the household. Not only in this story does Poirot retrieve a stolen ruby but he also helps his hosts to rid themselves of a problem of their own. This is a brilliant book and well worth the read.

Joely is a night detective and a vampire. Unfortunately, she is losing large amounts of time. She isn't close to anyone to find out if it is normal.

Unique and Complex

Vampire's Fury is an excellent example of vampire fiction. I loved the plot and the chemistry that quickly builds between the two main characters. The idea of a man learning to love a woman that may have possibly killed his last surviving relative is unique and complex. If you love paranormal romance, I highly suggest this book.
