A must for any type of student going into to a clinical career!

Great book! I'm a 4th year medical student, and this book provide a systematic framework for taking a GREAT history. I feel like my school didnt teach interviewing very well, and I developed my own technique by struggling through 3rd year without much guidance (some of which turned out to be similar to what this book suggests). Still, this book continues to offer more information and tips on continuing to improve my history gathering skills!

Great intro to fundamental interviewing skills

This updated textbook contains much of the latest evidence in its review of the medical literature on patient-centered medical interviewing, and presents it in an astonishingly clear, concise approach that students in the beginning of their medical training will find invaluable. Practicing physicians will also find the summaries refreshing and helpful. Highly recommend.

The definitive guide to patient-centered interviewing

This 3rd edition of Smith's Patient-Centered Interviewing provides health professions students and practitioners with an in-depth, comprehensive, and elegant treatise on how to perform an effective medical interview by integrating non- directive with directive approaches to communication. The authors present the interview in steps that can be learned and practiced and include a number of helpful pedagogical tools such as a pocket card, clinical vignettes, lists of essential questions, graphics, and exercises for deliberate practice. Throughout, the authors paint a portrait of the patient-centered interview with examples of the words that clinicians and patients might say in real encounters. There are also chapters addressing special challenges, advanced skills, oral presentation, and documentation. At my medical school, I recommend this book to medical students as an essential text and also incorporate it into the training of standardized patients.

About the Author

Rachel E. Golden, Dr.P.H., M.P.H. joined Sociometrics Corporation in 2010 as a Senior Research Associate. In her role, Dr. Golden examines and compares HIV/AIDS prevention programs and focuses on the development and evaluation of health promotion projects and program replication for diverse populations. In addition, she is Vice Chair of Sociometrics’ IRB. Before coming to Sociometrics, Dr. Golden worked for the Los Angeles County (LAC) Department of Public Health, where she oversaw the LA Health Overview of a Pregnancy Event Project, focusing on fetal and infant mortality. She also supported the LAC Action Learning Collaborative Partnership to Eliminate Disparities in Infant Mortality, and assisted the LA Mothers and Babies Project. Prior to that she served as a grant-writer and program evaluator for the Rescatando Salud/Health Rescue Promotora Project, housed in the LAC Department of Health Services.

Charles B Collins, Jr. Ph.D. is the Team Leader of the Science Application Team, Capacity Building Branch, National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His team of scientists is responsible for the dissemination of evidence-based behavioral interventions into HIV prevention practice. His team is working with 26 evidence-based interventions designated as having the highest evidence of efficacy for HIV prevention. Over the last 8 years, these interventions have been disseminated to over 3900 community-based prevention agencies; to over 900 city, county, and state health departments; and to over 1100 medical clinics.

A bit tedious but useful

I used this book for a nutrition counseling course. It has a good amount of explanation and examples but it's a bit boring to read. I did refer back to it several times but I expected a bit more out of the book in terms of content. It would be nice to have answers to the end-of-chapter questions and case studies.

she admits that "[i]t's boring to describe one's interstate route

I've decided to give up on this book at page 77. It's because it's not primarily a book about the last days of the Space Shuttle; it's primarily a book about Margaret Lazarus Dean. The book is weighed down with self-indulgent and trivial anecdotes about Dean that add nothing to the story. For instance, at page 75, she admits that "[i]t's boring to describe one's interstate route," and then nevertheless goes on to do just that for another two pages. We learn about I-75, its length, how long it takes to drive it to Florida, Dean's fear of driving long distances alone, how her husband was going to have to watch the kids while away on this trip, how her car felt while driving on I-75, that I-75 is a "generous and forgiving road" with "very little construction work", that Dean is going to listen to audiobooks during her drive, what the billboards say in Georgia, and that she ate at a Cracker Barrel.

I thought this was a book about the Shuttle? There are some interesting facts in the book, but not nearly enough to get me through passage after passage like the one above. A big disappointment.

“Leaving Orbit" is a personal quest to understand the end of NASA’s space shuttle program. Author, professor and space enthusiast, Margaret Lazarus Dean provides readers with a sentimental eulogy of sorts of the space program from a first-person perspective. This heartfelt 240-page book includes the following nine chapters: 1. The Beginnings of the Future: This Is Cape Canaveral, 2. What It Felt Like to Walk on the Moon, 3. Good-bye, Discovery, 4. A Brief History of the Future, 5. Good-bye, Endeavour, 6. A Brief History of Spacefarers, 7. Good-bye, Atlantis, 8. The End of the Future: Wheel Stop, and 9. The Future.

Positives:
1. An accessible, well-written and very descriptive book.
2. A fascinating topic. A look at the end of NASA’s space shuttle program.
3. Dean is an excellent storyteller. No shortage of words to describe her launch visits.
4. A good mix of personal anecdotes mixed with historical references.
5. Interesting facts provided. “Together the five orbiters Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour have flown a total of 133 successful missions, an unequaled accomplishment of engineering, management, and political savvy.”
6. Much of the story of this book revolves around the last three space shuttle missions. “The era of American spaceflight that started in 1961 when Alan Shepard became the first American to travel in space is about to come to an end, and few people seem to notice or care. Two more space shuttle missions are scheduled: STS-133 and STS-134. (STS stands for Space Transportation System, the original name for the space shuttle program from the seventies). A third mission, STS-135, will be added if NASA can get approval from Congress. This would mean one final launch for each of the three remaining space shuttle orbiters: Discovery, Endeavour, and Atlantis.”
7. Interesting spaceflight history. “American spaceflight did not begin at the Kennedy Space Center; nor did it begin at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station across the Banana River from here. It began in the early twentieth century when three men working independently in three different countries all developed the same ideas more or less simultaneously about how rockets could be used for space travel. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in Russia, Hermann Oberth in Germany, and Robert Goddard in the United States all came up with an eerily similar concept for using liquid fuel to power rockets for human spaceflight.”

The origin of NASA. “A tiny government agency called the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics had been in charge of overseeing the development of new airplane technology, including the plane that Chuck Yeager had flown to break the sound barrier in 1947, but their ambitious plans for sending pilots into space had always been dismissed as too expensive, too dangerous, and ultimately pointless. After Sputnik, President Eisenhower took a new interest in the activities of NACA and turned it into NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, with an infusion of funding. NASA was meant to beat the Soviets at their own game. The space race was on, and it seemed that the Soviets already might have won it.”

His total reimbursement for the trip was thirty-three dollars.”

16. The politics of flying. “There are four warring interests in spaceflight: ambitiousness of vision, urgency of timetable, reduction of cost, and safety to astronauts. These can never be entirely reconciled. In the sixties, urgency and ambitiousness were the driving factors, and because this was understood and accepted, the massive cost and risk were accepted as well. We now seem to be at a moment when reduction of cost is paramount, with safety coming in a very close second. This being the case, we should not be surprised that ambitiousness and urgency have had to be set aside altogether. But it’s ludicrous to claim, as I often hear people do, that “NASA has lost its vision.” NASA has lost support, not vision.”
17. Dean touches the topic of women pilots. “The women were experienced pilots. Many of them had broken records; some had broken the sound barrier. Their efforts to get NASA to recognize them as potential astronaut candidates were met with evasion. When the women managed to gain access to the same rigorous physical and psychological testing the Mercury Seven had gone through at the Lovelace Clinic, thirteen of them passed. Some of the women beat records set by the men. By doing so, these thirteen women managed to create enough pressure that a congressional hearing was held to address the question of women joining the astronaut corps.”
18. The role of probes. “Atlantis was the first orbiter to launch an interplanetary probe, Magellan, which traveled to Venus. On its next flight, Atlantis launched the Galileo probe to Jupiter. Both probes’ missions were considered enormous successes, and both have greatly expanded our knowledge of the solar system.”

1. My biggest complaint about this book is the lack of scientific/engineering rigor. I understand that Ms. Dean’s background is in anthropology and English but collaboration with a science-minded educator would have provided more value.
2. Lack of visual material. The author does a wonderful job of narrating her story but where are some of the many photos she took? Links? Copyright issues?
3. Lack of supplemental material. No space shuttle tables that would make it easy for the reader to understand the differences between the five space shuttle orbiters.
4. Descriptive to a fault. More precisely, describing things that likely are of no interest to the public.
5. The danger of making oneself an important element of the story is that one’s traits (good and bad) come to light. A bit self-indulgent and on the whiny side.
6. For the record, I’m very liberal on social issues and felt Ms. Dean could have done a much better job on the subtopic of feminist issues. She has valid observations but I also felt that she didn’t dig deep enough. People do change over time and a person who may have had some reservations about women in space may change over time to realize how wrong that notion was.
7. Too many references to Norman Mailer.

In summary, this was an average book as far as I am concerned. It’s a fascinating topic in the hands of a gifted writer who loves the wonders of space exploration and has a keen eye for detail but it also lacks scientific meat and comes across more as a travelogue than a sound popular science book. The writing is engaging and very descriptive but the science was too basic and the lack of visual materials held this otherwise interesting book back. If you are a space enthusiast by all means read this book with reservations noted.

About the Author

Allen F. Repko, PhD, is the former director of the interdisciplinary studies program in the School of Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he developed and taught the program’s core curriculum for many years. The program is one of the largest in the United States. Repko has written extensively on all aspects of interdisciplinary studies, has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal Issues in Integrative Studies, and has served on the board of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS). Though recently “retired,” he continues to write and speak at AIS conventions, where he conducts annual workshops on interdisciplinary program development and assessment. He can be contacted at allenrepko@att.net.



Rick Szostak, PhD, is a professor of economics at the University of Alberta, where he has taught for 31 years. He is the author of a dozen books and 50 articles, all of an interdisciplinary nature. Several of his publications address how to do interdisciplinary research, teach interdisciplinary courses, administer interdisciplinary programs, or organize information in order to facilitate interdisciplinarity. As an associate dean, he created the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Alberta, the Science, Technology and Society program, an individualized major, and two courses about interdisciplinarity. He has twice served as coeditor of the interdisciplinary journal Issues in Integrative Studies. He was president of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) from 2011 to 2014. Boring, repetitive, and hard to finish. Each chapter seems like a restatement of the last. This book reads as if it's an ongoing justification for Interdisciplinary Studies. Lots of theory and terminology, little in terms of concrete steps to take.

A Jumbled History of a Major Mystery

Vimanas have long been of interest, so I bought this book with high hopes. The prospect of flying craft in the skies of ancient India is inherently interesting, and if true, raises a multitude of questions that demand answers. Unfortunately, Childress's book adds little to the vimana lore or understanding. There are, to be fair, some meaningful portions of the book, but the organization frequently keeps one on the fringes of the topic or veers into topics only loosely related . What works against the credibility and is the most damaging is the author's strange choice to include the "Vimanika Shastra" document as a source. He admits the work is highly questionable and was, most likely, "channeled" to the writer, and yet he devotes a whole chapter to it and ends up treating it as a valid source. There are more authoritative books available, and I suggest buying one of them instead.

An Excellent Review of an Ancient Unexpected Past

After the reader stumbles through the initial tongue-twisting names, the revelation of a history not taught in modern schools becomes quite an eye opener. To think that aircraft was just as common in 10,000 B.C. as it is today, and that atomic weapons devastated much of our planet, and may have been a contributing factor in the destruction of Atlantis, is mind-boggling, Erich von Daniken wasn't so far off after all. Aliens or Amanitas

While the Arab world is slowly breaking away from their mythic theme, the narrative of Muhammad, the “praiseworthy” one, a mythic hero and non-person, and Ah-Leah (Allah), the Moon God of War, the West has “reformed.” In short, our myth of an all-powerful God who rewards and punishes in an arbitrary manner, has been brought into serious doubt. This is troubling because a culture needs a myth to guide it, some goal or promise of a future good life. David Childress’, Vimana: Flying Machines of the Ancients, is a recent effort in a long series of books and video presentations to establish a new myth for a new age. For those interested in myth (in this case meta-myth, or myth about myth – Sumerian, Hindu, etc.) and its development I highly recommend Vimana and all the previous books related to the existence of space aliens on Earth and the imagined technology surrounding these beings. The revised myth is essentially a rework of Christianity, with a good God/good space alien (the “Greens”) battling the Devil/evil space aliens (the “Greys”). However, in the future the Greens, like Jesus and many saviors before, will return, battle the Greys, and evil will be vanquished! The new myth involves genetic engineering and interbreeding, slavery of humans to mine gold, on and on. Much of what the Ancient Alien Hunters present as proof of space alien involvement on Earth is silly and represents a clear case of confusion of a symbol with its reference. In doing so they have contaminated the whole field. Flying machines are one of the examples. None of the flying machines referenced and imagined reading the Mahabharata would possibly fly, nor would passengers survive the experience. Yes, there is the possibility of hot air balloons, although I question this as well, let along interplanetary vessels. There is no industry, no archaeological data to suggests the ancients had the technology – the metallurgy, plastics, ceramics, etc., etc., to fly around in the heavens, or have weapons of mass destruction. The suggestion is that all the metals, industrial shops, etc. would have disintegrated over the course of the millennia. If we have pottery dating back 10,000 years you can rest assured we would have evidence of materials necessary for manned flight. The technology is likewise presented as “magical,” with references to levitation, anti-gravity possibilities. In short, the ancients or ancient space aliens had the ability to overcome or ignore physical laws.
So, what are the stories about, these flying machines referenced in the Mahabharata, suggested in Sumerian art, or imagined with the airplane of Saqqara? I direct the reader’s attention to two recent works. First, Mandelkehr, M. 2006. The 2300 BC Event, Vols. 1-3, and, Bond, A. and Hempsell, M. 2007. A Sumerian Observation of the Kofels’ Impact Event. These two works offer a more realistic and scientific account of intense meteor showers that occurred around 2300 BC, an event that corresponds with the collapse of the Indus Valley Civilization and many others. There have been numerous cataclysmic events in Earth’s prehistory and the most recent events, beginning around 9600 BC, would have stayed in the memory of our ancient ancestors and interpreted according to their cosmic perception, that is, gods flying about in vessels of one type or another, firing plasma and dropping bombs, and so forth.
But there is even a more compelling reason to question the Ancient Alien Hunter’s interpretation of the ancient’s explanation of cosmic events, and that is entheogens, mind-altering substances (drugs) used by our kind for thousands and thousands of years to commune with the other side and interpret events and make decisions accordingly (see, Entheogens and the Development of Culture). There are numerous substances – cannabis, henbane, belladonna, Datura, ephedra, opium, Syrian Rue, Psilocybe sps., Amanita muscaria – mentioned in the literature, displayed in art (Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, etc. – see, The Mushroom in Christian Art), and found in archaeological sites. The priests/poets were the elite and they reported an elite experience – they had wonderful imaginations! All religious traditions are based on the use of entheogens beginning with shamanism right up to the present day. I would be delighted if someone would challenge me on this position. So, is it Amanitas or space aliens?
The Ancient Alien Hunters need to explain away natural occurrences (meteor showers, etc.), and how our ancient ancestors could have interpreted these intense events. They also need to address the ritual use of powerful mind-altering substances and how these explain the wild imaginings of a people long ago trying to make sense of their experiences of their environment. I highly recommend all of Childress’ works for those interested in the construction of a new myth, revamping old symbols, to fit a modern appetite.
