Complementary to official OF documentation

At first, I was hoping that this book will act as a easier to read version of OpenFlow documentation. I hoped that it will present some examples by analogy to many of OF features. When I read first few chapters I had a moment of lack of faith. This book did not meet my expectations nor my needs at all. But (thankfully) since I have spent some money on it, I have decided to read on.

After further reading I can say that if you want to have an overall knowledge on OpenFlow - read the official documentation ... but if you are planning on implementing some OpenFlow logic to a switch or a southbound plugin to a controller - grab this book. It may help.

Each chapter of this book is written with use of the same template. This is extremely boring to read, but thanks to this, even if you will jump in into a chapter in the middle of the book, you will know where to look for information you need.

In overall, this is not a book that I expected to be, but I can say that I am happy that I have read it.

Great recipies that helps one develop in OpenFlow switch and OpenFlow controller. Manage multiple switches from a single controller and a single switch from multiple controllers with different controller roles. Would recommend it to network protocol developers & SDN controller application developers.

This is a very useful reference to have to hand when working with Openflow on merchant silicon switches. It also very usefully complements the introductory book by Azodolmolky - Software Defined Networking with OpenFlow.

About the Author
Elsa Ronningstam, Ph.D., has been studying narcissism and treating people with narcissistic disorders for nearly 25 years. Her research contributions to the understanding of NPD appear in such journals as The American Journal of Psychiatry, The Harvard Review of Psychiatry and The Journal of Personality Disorders. She is respected both in the United States and internationally as an author, instructor and clinician. Dr Ronningstam is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Clinical Psychologist at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, USA.

A revealing wealth of information

I wanted to know more information on this disorder. Having been exposed to many people exhibiting this particular problem I thought it would do me good to understand why they think as they do and how to interact with them more effectively. I have come to realize that you cannot help them but you can understand their disorder by having this information at your disposal.

I am sharing parts of the book so you will see exactly how it is written and so helpful to those of us dealing with these types of personalities and their associated disorders.

Borderline-narcissistic and narcissistic-borderline disorders affect moods, a sense of inapporopriateness, depersonalization, anger, feelings of emptiness and bordeom and a sense of injustice and alienation are noted.

The Phallic narcissistic character as described in the book being self-confident, arogant, vigorousm and impressive individual an athletic type-with hard and sharp features. These individuals are haughty, cold, reserved or aggressive with disguised sadistic traits in relation to others. When hurt, they react with cold reserve, deep depression, or intense aggression. Their narcissism is expressed in an exaggerated display of self-confidence, dignity, and superiority.

They often choose relationships and social context that support and enhance themselves but also intentionally influence the interpersonal or social situation in the service of self-promotion or enhancement of self-esteem. Soliciting admiration and constraining or manipulation others' views to obtain a desired self-image are examples of such strategies. In other words, people with high narcissism are strongly motivated to make positive self-distortions and exaggerate self-attributes in relationships with others.

In addition, narcissistic individuals use various strategies to protect theirselves at expense of others. they tend to devalue, derogate, or blame others, and then respond to threatening feedback with anger and hostility. Other examples of interactive strategies are biased interpretations of feedback, selective attention, and selective or distorted recall of past events. A specific strategy, self-handicapping behavior, serves to protect public image as the individual identifies impediments to performance, which are used either to discount subsequent failure or to reinforce success.

The dynamics of these self-regulatory processes have been related to clinical diagnostic traits for narcissism such as self-exaggeration, arrogant behavior, hostility, entitlement, and lack of empathy.

Description of the narcissistic personality and people driven by it has been clearly defined on this book. It has given me much insight into the minds of those I have been exposed to and had to deal with over the past nine years. I was missing the whole point of why they feel such a need for self-promotion and self-interest to the extremes of coercing those around them to join in to be a part of their distorted and dishonest plots of exploitations.

This book is worth more than its purchase price and more. It gives you a fresh outlook and complete understanding into many issues narcissistics have including the suicidal tendencies and attempts many of them exhibit. It has given me a greater understanding and compassion for a dear man I know well who has had many of these narcissistic influences to cope during his own upbringing and even in recent years, the negativity that surrounds many he once knew.

If you want to be enlightened, buy this book and read it. I highly recommend it.

Highly technical but worth the read

I was not dissapointed with this book.But anyone considering purchasing it should be aware that it has been largely written for clinicians. Becuase of this, the topic is not written about in a chatty easily understtod form as so many books and articles on narcissism are. Helpful summaries exist at the end of each chapter, nevertheless, the average lay reader may find themselves going over recently read sections several times before they fully grasp what is being said. It is a balanced insightful up to date and highly informative book and anyone who is seriously interested in coming to grips with this oftentimes crippling condition should consider reading it.

Exactly what I was looking for

Having only an amateur interest in personality and personality disorders, I found this to be an excellent resource. It explains what narcissism is, it's relation to self-esteem regulation, how it interacts with other personality disorders, and discusses suicide motivation and ideation in narcissistic individuals.

It presents a modern and balanced view of NPD, taking careful note of the differences between hyper-vigilant and arrogant types of narcissism, explaining how they can be expressed under a wide range of circumstances, and cognizant of both narcissism's benefits and detriments, particularly among leadership and in the workplace.

The United States profoundly influenced at the same time Western Europe's new consumer culture, economic management, and popular entertainment.

The war also accelerated Western decolonization in the Third World and thereby occasioned a worlwide power shift. Victory, for a time, also legitimized the Soviet system in the eyes of its citizens; victory expanded Soviet rule over East-Central Europe. World War II thereby engendered the cold war, which the Soviet Union would ultimately lose.

A little gem

This slim volume is one of the most entertaining and informative basic dermatopathology texts available. It is lavishly (and generally well) illustrated and covers the essential points of most dermatopathological entities in the form of bullet points and a short (typically a small paragraph) discussion. There are numerous little mnemonics, tips and "pearls" scattered through the text. For anyone who has enjoyed Dirk Elston's lectures, much of the same engaging spirit which enables important messages to be retained is recapitulated in this book. The purchaser is also given access to a series of online lectures, from my limited viewing apparently directed at resident level. My only "criticism" of this book is that Dr Elston's enthusiasm for "creepy crawlies" has resulted in somewhat larger sections on topics such as identification of parasites than one might expect for a book of this size.

While this book will not be the only dermatopathology text a trainee in pathology or dermatology will need, it certainly is a valuable book for preview or overview of subjects. I have already used some of the mnemonics in teaching sessions and even in recalling some differential diagnostic possibilities in signout. For the relatively small cost (both in dollars and time, since with the abundant illustrations a cover to cover reading can be accomplished over a few evenings) I think this is one of the better value educational experiences available.

As succinct and high yield as it gets in dermpath

This book has an excellent layout with numerous histologic images and easy to read, fact filled tables for differential diagnoses. It is also written in a very easy to understand fashion with fun mnemonics so that the pathologists or dermatologists in training can quickly master the sometimes befuddling field of dermatopathology. The authors are all well known and respected in their field and did an amazing job by being very succinct yet still very thorough in their presentation. If you have one book with you during dermpath sign-out, I would recommend this text.

What is the appropriate architecture for modern times? Should it free itself from the shackles of earlier forms? Or should the received wisdom of the past be incorporated into new buildings? Architects and critics have debated these questions for over a century. Rather than validate a particular ideology, Dennis Doordan's thoughtful, wide-ranging survey follows the progression of modern architecture as a manifestation of this debate.

Histories of modern architecture are often conceived as the struggle, triumph, and inevitable exhaustion of high modernism in the United States, Western Europe, and Scandinavia. The reader of Twentieth-Century Architecture will encounter instead a more global and open approach that considers what was possible, desirable, and appropriate during a volatile era of unprecedented opportunities.

There are three parts: Confronting Modernity, 1900-1940; Modernist Hegemony, 1940-1965; and An Era of Pluralism, 1965-2000. Covering developments in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, Dennis Doordan discusses the form, function, materials, and technologies of domestic and recreational spaces, workplaces, and buildings that reflect the chosen image of the state, and he also provides some treatment of city planning.

Along the way, the reader is treated to a thorough discussion of the work of architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Pietro Belluschi, Paul Bonatz, Le Corbusier, Bertram Goodhue, Walter Gropius, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Julia Morgan, Oscar Niemeyer, Marcello Piacentini, Raili and Reima Pietila, Alison and Peter Smithson, James Stirling, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Dennis P. Doordan is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He is the author of Building Modern Italy: Italian Architecture, 1914-1936 (Princeton Architectural Press, 1988), as well as numerous articles. He is the editor of Design History: An Anthology (MIT Press, 1996) and coeditor of Design Issues, a leading international journal devoted to the history, theory, and criticism of design.

Books belong in the hands of readers and every author imagines who his or her readers may be. This book is an introductory survey of twentieth-century architecture for students engaged in the study of the subject and its relationship to the social, cultural, and political life of the period. It is the author's hope that this text will provoke students to pursue the subject further. If the book starts the reader on a quest to learn more about the subject and draws him or her ever deeper into the issues, it will have accomplished its principal goal.

A second, equally important group of readers will pick up this book not because they are enrolled in a formal educational program but because they are motivated by curiosity. We spend our lives surrounded by buildings and for most of us those of the twentieth century constitute the largest portion of the architecture encountered on a daily basis. Therefore, it is only natural to wonder about something as pervasive, important, and engaging as architecture. What accounts for its diversity in the twentieth century? What stories, ideals, hopes, and fears were architects trying to convey to their peers and to posterity? The author hopes the general reader will find his or her curiosity rewarded and consequently an appreciation of the world around them enhanced.

This book is divided into three main sections. The first part, "Confronting Modernity," surveys four discrete domains of professional design activity in the period 1900-1940: urban architecture, domestic architecture, the architecture of industry and transportation, and political architecture. This period is described as one of intense debate among architects advocating different approaches such as classicism, modernism, organicism, and craft-based design. The second part, "Modernist Hegemony," reviews developments during the period 1940-1965. During these years, the terms of the debate concerning the character of an appropriate architecture were dramatically revised—and narrowed. It is still a period marked by lively discussion, but the discourse is now predicated almost entirely in terms of modernism and modernist conceptions of appropriate models and design strategies. The third part, "An Era of Pluralism," covers the years 1965-2000. A new consciousness of environmental issues, new scientific paradigms, and critical theories of knowledge called into question the certainties of modernism. This part reviews the spectrum of design movements—postmodernism, deconstructivism, new classicism, "green" architecture, and even a reinvigorated modernism—characteristic of the last decades of the twentieth century.

A Wonderful, Contrarian Study of Urban Issues

Edward C. Banfield's most important work, Unheavenly City (and its revised edition, Unheavenly City Revisited) was and remains a dramatic challenge to the traditional concepts of urban renewal originating in the New Deal. The book was intensely controversial when it was published, and it's not hard to see why from reading it, as Banfield challenges almost every tenet of the existing urban studies orthodoxy. From the impact of minimum wage laws to the importance of social class, the author touches every important issue that faces the underclass in cities, with often surprising recommendations.
Conservatives will appreciate what is probably the best statement of a conservative plan and thinking about the plight of cities, but Banfield's meticulous use of careful arguments and research make the book useful for those who disagree with him as well. An excellent book for anyone who wants to examine the problems of cities and challenge their own assumptions, with bold recommendations for helping those trapped in poverty.

This book is one of the most read, and debate documents in America today.

During President Nixons short term in office, he commissioned a Congressional Study to answer the question, "Why can't one of the richest nations in the world (at that time it was America) eliminate proverty. The results of the study were so controversial that the Study was never released to the Public, but copies are still available in the Congressional Library today. The main problem of the study is that many people who read it concluded that the reason that America could not eliminate poverty was due to "racial prejudince and practices. Nothing could be further from the truth. Edward Banfield took it upon himself to do his own study in order to answer the same question. You will notice that the title of the book has the key work in it, "Revisited". He had already written the "Unheavenly City" and it was so poorly misinterpreted that he came back and wrote the "Unheavenly City Revisited" to try to explain that the reason that America could not elimiate poverty, was not in fact due to "racial overtones", but in fact was due to "the future orientations of generations of people that created four differnent Classes of people: !) the Upper Class; 2) the Middle Class; 3) the Working Class; and 4) the Lower Class. What caused people to end up in which class had nothing to do with racial matters, it had every thing to do with the "future orientations" of the people with each class. The Upper Class held visions and dreams beyond their own life times, and because of this remarkable future orientation they built their wealth and success so that they could have an impact on the world they lived in, and could leave a legacy and inheritance behind. The Middle Class had a long term future orientation that allowed them to dream and have a vision of continuing to improve both their social and financial status during their lifetimes. The Working Class did not have long term future orienations, but mostly focused on living for one season to the next in the agricultural farming and ranching business, or from pay check to pay check as employees. Due to their lack of long term furture dreams and no vision beyond one season to another or from pay check to pay check, they were the victim of circomstances and became trapped in that class. The Poor Class did not have any future orientation, they continued to breed generation after generations of people that lived from one moment to the next, continuing to become enslaved in the poverty trap. This book is a well documented piece of research. It is a most read for anyone that truly wants to understand why poverty cannot be eliminated in America, and why racial factors have very little to do with poverty. It is a must read to any one who actually believers that "racial matters" are the cause of poverty in America. The very myth that racial matters have everything to do with poverty actually helps perpetuates "racial biases" in America. Be prepared to have an eye opening experience.

Live in a US city? then welcome to Hell

Hell? Yes, that is the general impression of urban America that you are left with after reading 'The Unheavenly City Revisited'. There are a couple of reasons for this. The original book 'The Unheavenly City' was first published in 1970 and then 'Revisited' in 1974. In many ways urban America is quite different today than it was then. It is no coincidence that an entire chapter is devoted to riots. Watts in 1965 and Detroit in 1967 were still very much a topic of discussion by urban planners. The main reason though for the impression of an urban hell is because that's exactly what the author believed we were creating. The main purpose of this book was to challenge and refute traditional approaches to urban planning. One of Banfields main contentions was that "we do not know and can never know what the real nature of the problem is, let alone what might work to alleviate or solve it". He wanted to make urban planning more multidisciplinary, bring in new approaches and ideas and broaden the debate.
He broadened the debate all right. There was such a storm of controversy that surrounded 'The Unheavenly City' that the author had to take the unusual step of publishing the 'Revisited' version only four years later largely to provide clarity and explain some of the more contentious points that he raised. For instance, the chapter entitled 'The Imperatives of Class' generated a lot of heat. Banfield was accused of saying that the lower class was synonymous with African Americans and the poor. He didn't say that. It didn't matter though because by bringing it up and dancing around it for an entire chapter he left himself open to critics who said 'Well it's what you meant even if you didn't say it.
Not all the criticism was related to his arguments and certainly not all of it was fair. It is clear that a lot of the criticism has to do with the fact that the book was written by someone who was not an urban planner. Banfield is a social scientist and his book reads like a philosophy of city life or urban psychology. The professionals did not like this approach, moreso because Banfield was critical of their motives "the reformer wants to improve the situation of the poor, the black, the slum dweller, and so on, not so much to make them better off materially as to to make himself and the whole society better off morally".
The book is recommended because of it's historical significance and because it gives an interesting perspective on the debate about urban policy thirty years ago. Be prepared to reread some sections though because the author does ramble and remember it was a text book so the writing style is dry.
