Children decorate for Christmas
By Amazon Customer
Jane and Her Friends Celebrate Christmas
This very colorful children's book is about Jane and her friends and all the things they do together to get ready for Christmas.
Everything from the tree, ornaments, stockings, etc. Love all the rhyming parts and the visit from Santa.
Love how this is turned into a guessing number game at the end and there is also a nice surprise for a child.
There are other free books to get listed at the end.

A little disappointed
By MAB
This is a cute, short book, but not what I thought it would be like. I had purchased "Jane bakes a Pumpkin Pie" by this author and my two year old LOVES it. It is a rhyming book and a lot of fun to read. It really keeps her attention. I thought this book would be written in a similar fashion but it was not. It did not rhyme and my child did not seem to enjoy it as much.

We love Jane and Friends stories
By Monica
This is the 3rd Jane and her friends book we read. My kids (4 and 8 years old) like them very much. They study English as second language, so the vocabulary presented is very appropriate for them to learn more words and the text is simple enough for them to understand and also not so simple to make it boring. The drawing are ver, very nice. We liked it very much.

By Genesis @ Latte Nights Reviews
This 3.5 coffee mugs review was first published on Latte Nights Reviews.

This review may be a spoiler for the first 2 books of the series.

I read the first two books of the Angel Sight series when I first started blogging and I have to say I fell in love with the characters, especially the fallen, wingless angel Kade. I kept paying attention to when this blog tour would be announced and finally it was and I was selected to be a part of it! Each book had a cliffhanger and I just needed this third book, thinking that it would be the end, with a happy ending, you know? Yeah, well… Not the case. Apparently, we are left with another cliffhanger, which I have not recovered from at all, even though it’s a very small cliffhanger.

The fights are bad-ass. Lisa always manages to describe everything so perfectly. It’s very hard for me to read fight scenes because sometimes, I have no idea what the hell they are doing but that has never been the case with this series, which I have loved since the beginning. You’re probably thinking why I gave this book 3.5 stars, since I liked it. The reason being that I consider the previous books much better than this one. I felt the story rushed and at times, it would go at a slow pace. Then when I reach the ending, it’s pretty much a cliffhanger and I’m left dumbfounded.

All in all, I won’t say it was the perfect ending because I believe it continues, but when it comes to fighting the Fallen, it was amazing. The book was very well balanced with the characters. This was told in dual points of view, which I totally loved because I got to get inside Kade’s head, the guy I have loved since the beginning. Also, something I liked about was more emotional level it had, more so than the previous ones.

Fans of this story won’t be disappointed, except for the ending. Don’t take it the wrong way, all of it has a great ending but there’s a very small matter that has me thinking that there could be another story, maybe not centered on Kade and Rayna but I hope there’s another addition to this because I really want to know what is happening to one of the characters.

I can’t say much more because it will really be big spoilers but if you guys haven’t read this series, I really recommend it. Don’t be biased on my rating but focus on the actual review itself. The book is very interesting for sure and I got to read about my favorite characters that I’m sure you will love, as well.

Fast-paced and Exciting!
By Elizabeth Holloway
I started reading A Matter of Time with a tinge of trepidation. I loved the second book so much, I was worried I wouldn't like the last book and it would ruin the whole series for me (like the last book of a certain dystopian series did for me). But I was also afraid I would like it too much and become dreadfully sad that the series is over. The second fear ended up being true.

A Matter of Time is a whirlwind. Fast-paced and exciting with just enough sizzle to keep the romance lover in me on her toes. The chemistry between Rayna and Kade is electric. I loved almost every minute of this book. I say almost because I was a tad disappointed with the ending. Not only did I really want it to continue, but I was a little thrown off by a change in POV. I REALLY would have liked to have seen that last scene from Ray's, or even Kade's, POV. That being said, it's an awesome book and an awesome series. Highly recommended.

Circling the Sun: A Novel, by Paula McLain

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER •NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS•“Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country Living

Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller The Paris Wife, now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s delicate balance. But even the wild child must grow up, and when everything Beryl knows and trusts dissolves, she is catapulted into a string of disastrous relationships.

Beryl forges her own path as a horse trainer, and her uncommon style attracts the eye of the Happy Valley set, a decadent, bohemian community of European expats who also live and love by their own set of rules. But it’s the ruggedly charismatic Denys Finch Hatton who ultimately helps Beryl navigate the uncharted territory of her own heart. The intensity of their love reveals Beryl’s truest self and her fate: to fly.

Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain’s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2015: Sometimes a reader craves a good, old-fashioned yarn. This much anticipated novel from the author of The Paris Wife is exactly that: an engrossing story of love and adventure in colonial Africa, complete with gorgeous landscape, dissolute British ex-pats, and lots of derring-do with horses, motorcars and airplanes. That it is also the best kind of contemporary historical novel – the kind that teaches you something about the real people and events of the time – is a bonus. At the center of the novel is Beryl Markham (born – you gotta love it – Clutterbuck), the headstrong daughter of a British colonial who grew up more comfortable among the people and animals of her adopted Kenya than in the homes of its landed gentry. When Beryl’s mother leaves the family and her father gives up the farm, she marries (at 16) a gentleman farmer, a drunk too louche to be much of a husband. Like privileged but love-hungry teenage girls past and future, Beryl seeks companionship from her horses, becoming the first and greatest female horse trainer in the region. Along the way, she hobnobs with Kenyan high society, including, but not limited to, Karen Blixen (who authored her own epic story, Out of Africa, under the pen name Isaak Dinesen) and her lover Denys Finch Hatten (who will always be Robert Redford to those of us who watched him play the role in the movie version of Dinesen’s book.) Much bed-hopping and relationship-boundary-pushing ensue, with all the teeth-gnashing and yearning that goes along with it, no matter the era. Those who knew about Markham before reading this book may be surprised by how little there is about her as a pilot. She is, after all, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from east to west, and she wrote her own memoir, 1942’s West with the Night; here, it is only in the book’s frame – a prologue and its final chapter – that we get a glimpse of the way that Beryl will, literally, soar. But McLain doesn’t seem interested in portraying her as a trailblazing feminist with an idea about changing the world; the Beryl Markham here is noteworthy precisely because she is NOT those things so much as a girl who grew up pushing back against conventions that got in her way. “But you’ve never been afraid of anything, have you?” Finch Hatten says to her in their last meeting. “I have, though,” she replies. “I’ve been terrified. . .I just haven’t let that stop me.” -- Sara Nelson

Unremarkable; Read West with the Night Instead
By Steven M. Anthony
This is a novel of historical fiction, taking as its subject the life of Beryl Markham, an English woman who grew up and spent much of her time in British East Africa (Kenya). Ms. Markham was quite a free spirit and trailblazer, undertaking many activities (horse training and aviation) that were strictly the province of males at the time.

This novel is very simply written and largely unremarkable. In a move certainly meant to raise interest and boost sales, many of the characters overlap with those of Isek Dinesen’s Out of Africa. You’ll find Baroness Karen Blixen, Denis Finch-Hatton, Lord and Lady Delamere, Bror and Barkley playing prominent roles. Not being aware of the actual history of Ms. Markham, it is hard to tell how much artistic license is taken here, though I don’t doubt that the English ex-pat community in Kenya was a tight knit group.

Again, the writing is very pedestrian and the characters rather two dimensional. Having been to Kenya, it is a pleasure to relive the landscapes and cultures, but this book does little in my opinion to bring those things to life. Overlapping so much with Out of Africa is a double edged sword, because the writing in this case pales by comparison.

Markham was largely a horse trainer by birth (following in her father’s footsteps) and training. It is therefore inexcusable that the author would make some pretty basic errors in both terminology and practice when dealing with her profession. She repeatedly refers to Markham purchasing yearling and two year old “studs”. Studs are breeders. Prior to age four, male thoroughbreds are referred to as “colts”, thereafter “horses” until sent to the breeding shed, at which point they become “studs”. She refers to a yearling “stud” undergoing training. Yearlings are too immature to undergo training (not the same as “breaking”), and do not race until age two. The type of races referred to by the author (1 miles) would not be undertaken by a two year old colt and certainly not against far stronger older horses.

The novel also largely papers over the widely acknowledged affair between Markham and the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Henry, in effect insinuating that it never happened. This despite the fact that the Prince paid her an annuity for the remainder of her 83 year long life. Given her impressively long string of lovers (both while married and single), it is doubtful that her friendship with the Duke was platonic.

Finally, in the Acknowledgements it is disclosed that Ms. Markham penned an autobiography of sorts, West with the Night, which was hailed by Ernest Hemingway as being beautifully written. Given a choice between the two, I can’t imagine you’d read this instead.

Some things good; some not

Circling the Sun—My thoughts
Thirty some years ago I read Out of Africa, West with the Night, and biographies of both Beryl Markham and Karen Blixen. I was mesmerized by the characters of Beryl and Karen and their intertwining lives and also by the glimpses of Africa gleaned from their writings. So I was anxious to revisit the characters and places in Paula McClain’s new novel about Beryl Markham, Circling the Sun.
In some ways it was a rewarding read. McClain’s prose is lush, fluid, crisp. I noted that McClain has a degree in poetry, and her writing style attests to that fact. The novel covers the span of Beryl’s life from childhood to her thirties. I feel that McClain did a fine job of pulling out the important phases of Beryl’s life during that time frame and connecting them together in a compelling narrative. Also, I applaud McClain’s depiction of Beryl as strong willed and self-determine. And more importantly, we see that Beryl is talented and competent in her pursuits of horse training and later flying.
But I feel there are other aspects of Beryl’s characterization that miss the mark and do so by a long shot. Beryl is endowed with a wisdom and philosophical bent that can only come from years of living. The bride of 16 in the novel seems more patient, more knowing, more socially skilled than the characters around her. McClain does rightfully depict Beryl as a character who is victimized by the abandonment and betrayal of family and friends, but the Beryl of the novel rises to a level of magnanimity and nobility that doesn’t match the depictions of her in the conversations and writings of her contemporaries and biographers. In Circling the Sun, we see a wounded Beryl who comes to the aid of her faltering parents and who chooses to simply ignore the vicious rumors that plague her life. We are lead to believe that tales of Beryl’s ruthless pursuit of unattainable men and her shocking disregard for friendships and pubic decorum are concoctions fostered by gossips and society vigilantes. I don’t think so. There are too many witnesses, too many friends, too many sources and biographers who paint Beryl as an opportunist with little regard for the feelings of others.
So I find McClain’s portrait of Beryl nearly impossible to accept, and I find it hard to believe that McClain actually holds Beryl in such pristine regard. She (McClain), after all, has read the same bios and articles I have. McClain tells us that she found a kinship with Beryl because she, too, was abandoned by her mother at an early age, only to have her own mother reappear when she was in her 20’s in the same way that Beryl’s mother did. So then, hmmmm . . . perhaps McClain has over identified with her character, and the Beryl she has created is mythologized in a way that is untrue to her and also unfair to Beryl and to us, the readers. Beryl’s true merits and accomplishments are well worth exploring and celebrating, and I believe she can be viewed as a more complex character and still a sympathetic character when the dark side of her personality is part of the narrative.
Interestingly enough, I came across an article in Town and Country magazine “An Insanely Glamorous Love Triangle” written by McClain herself in which she says,
"The mystery of the woman [Beryl] herself is only deepened by her writing— lyrical descriptions of paradise layered with pointed subterfuge. Instead of exposing the things that hurt her—her mother, for instance, or her father's betrayal—she romanticizes the difficulties of the natural world and of Green Hills, her father's farm, faultless as any Eden before the Fall."
Really? Yes, the descriptions are lyrical, but Beryl does not describe her father’s farm as an African paradise. And the purpose of West With The Night is not to provide an expose of her “damaged” childhood. It is rather a celebration of the life she embraced in Africa, both the good and the bad. Her vignettes are a collection of stories about encounters and friendships with the land, the animals, and the people around her.
In speaking of Karen, Denys, and Beryl, in the article Markham says, “These three were not simple people. And if they were cagey and difficult sometimes—unreliable narrators of their own lives—even so I can find something to admire in it.”
She goes on to say, “These shadows aren't visible in Out of Africa, which mythologizes Finch Hatton and over-perfects their love story.”
Those of us who have read Karen’s Out of Africa know that Karen and Denys’ love affair is not portrayed at all in her writings. Denys is only a marginal character because that is not what her book is about. Out of Africa, like West With The Night, is a collection of stories about one woman’s encounters with the African world and the people in it.
So, sorry, Ms. McClain, but I feel you are the unreliable story teller, not Ms. Dinesen or Ms. Markham. I can only appreciate and applaud a historical character brought to life when I feel it is an honest depiction. I don’t think your depiction of Beryl is an honest depiction.

A Woman True To Herself
By MaryAnn Dodd
A n enlighting historical novel about Beryl Markham and her days of growing up in Africa . Her mother left her and her husband to return to England when Beryl was only four. She grew up with African children and they were her best playmates. She is pushed into marriage at sixteen to a man twice her age. She is not the regular English wife. She gets a job training horses and becomes the first licensed female horse trainer in the world. The novel is focused mainly on her skills as a trainer rather than her airplane flying years. It also tells of her love affairs with several men and especially her love of Denys Finch Hatton and her friendship with Karen Blixen.

I was captured by the beautiful descriptions of Africa and the different seasons. The life of the Colonial British in Kenya during the twenties and thirties was educational for me. I enjoyed reading about that lifestyle and the "rules" of behavior for the Colonialists.

This book has led me to read Beryl Markham's autobiography West With The Night. I have the copy with photographs. I was especially interested in seeing one of Denys Finch Hatton.

Ethnographic Eyes: A Teacher's Guide to Classroom Observation, by Carolyn Frank

Whether you realize it or not, there is a hidden side of classroom life: everyday practices so ordinary and so routine that they often become invisible. The challenge to classroom observers is to understand and reveal these implicit patterns. For Carolyn Frank, ethnography provides the perfect lens through which to view them.

Ethnographic Eyes extends ethnography beyond the work of university researchers and proves what an accessible and instructive observation tool it can be for inservice and preservice teachers. Frank draws on extensive experience in teacher education, demonstrating how ethnography can help you see beneath the surface of classroom life, gain new understanding of diversity, and recognize that difference can be a resource for community building. Along the way, you'll learn how to record, analyze, and represent the particular kind of classroom culture that is being created. A Needed Text for Today's Preservice Teachers
By M. Pierce
If you are an aspiring teacher, a teacher trainer, or an experienced classroom teacher, you will find Dr. Frank's presentation both highly informative and motivating. Dr. Frank successfully takes the reader into a sense of "being there" while opening our eyes to the reality of personal biases. A helpful and friendly feature about her style is her accessibility, i.e., I felt that Dr. Frank was on hand to offer clarification and annotated insights as a means to better equip me in my own observation.

Helpful Guide
By Eric A. Scoppetta
This is a helpful guide on how to observe the "culture" of a classroom and write an ethnography. The author helps the reader become aware of how to put aside their own perspectives and see the implicit rules and structures that a teacher creates in his or her classroom.

Quick, Informative Read
By Ashley Bushman
This book was easy to read, I finished it in two sittings. It provides a lot of good information about truly observing a classroom's culture.

Mutants Masterminds Emerald City, by Steve Kenson, Darren Bulmer, Christopher McGlothlin

Emerald City is a brand new setting for your Mutants & Masterminds Third Edition campaign. Set in the same universe as the award-winning Freedom City, Emerald City provides a home base for your heroes and a place they can shine. This rich and detailed sourcebook describes a fully realized city that until recently was downright normal. It didn''t have alien armadas filling the sky, or mad gods trying to turn it into a Hell on Earth. Things were stable... until the Silver Storm tore through the city and unleashed a flood of dangerous super-villains and monsters! Now criminal masterminds have cast aside years of fragile peace, ready to go to war to settle old scores and claim the throne of the city''s underworld. Emerald City has no established teams to call on in this crisis. It is a city that needs heroes. Will you answer the call?

Enjoyable
By Jetpack
To get it out of the way, this was not a 224 page paperback. It was a 336 page hardcover. Which made the price much more reasonable. It also comes with a not quite poster size version of the map (player and GM version).

Unlike the other reviewer, I'm not as familiar with M&M. My first exposure was the DC books, and that encouraged me to try this out.

I quite enjoyed the city setting. I'm looking for background and setting, and while there isn't as much as I would have found in say the Shadowrun Seattle book, it's a good value as this is split up between three PDF's (player, GM and adventures).

There are NPC stats that they refer you to other books for, which I'm not a fan of, but other people don't like it when the same NPC is reprinted in 7 books, so can't win that one.

Enjoyed the characters. I can definitely see using a number of them, so big bonus there.

I'm a big fan of pre-written adventures at this point in my life, so happy to have a nice long one.

Art is pretty and full-color.

To me, I see a lot of value here. Would definitely suggest considering, if you want to try a new setting for a superhero game.

Great product
By Matthew Peterson
This is a hardcover book that gives you a breakdown on a fictional city set on the western US coast.

I am new to the mutants and masterminds system but not superhero games. So I have a pretty good idea on what to expect with a supplement.

The book has an adventure for up to 8 heros that are starting out. It does a good job at creating an event which can either make the players or they can be established heroes responding to the event. Whichever way the players go about it works great for bringing the team together. The adventure itself is a great jump off point to anyone that is new to this genre of rpg. Veteran players will still enjoy it too.

The book does a wonderful job at establishing the different areas of the city and it really tries to make the reader believe it could be a real place.

I know a lot of GMs like to create everything from scratch. But this book does a great job at making even prebuilt ideas take shape into something better.

The book even provides premade heroes if they don't feel comfortable making brand new ones yet.

My one flaw I found was the book has many points that reference other books. Granted the majority of them are to the rule book.

Overall I would say it is worth the price and a great addition to the GM guide for this game.

Bit of a train wreck
By Matthew Lane
Spoilers beyond this point

Okay, so I'll preface by saying that I'm a fan of M&M 3E & to a lesser degree a fan of the Freedom City setting, but this was a bit of a train wreck.

So in general the book suffered from misplaced zeal: It was so busy trying to tell us about all the things that aren't at all interesting to a superhero campaign setting that things like "actual information the players may have a use for" is sadly skimmed over.

To much of the pertinent information for the setting is in the adventure line, rather than in the setting books, which means that information is skipped entirely from chapters that information should be found in.

ARTWORK
One of my biggest issues with it is the artwork, which shares flaws with the writing.... Its not so much that the artwork is bad so much as its misused & quite often dull. An by that I mean that is you have dozens of b-roll images of buildings, an people, an images that could have been taken from a university guide book, but only a single clear image of Tellex & its not even in the section talking about Tellex: Its the visual equivalent of burying the leed. That really should have been your icon opening image, just like Freedom Cities opening image was the Freedom League floating in front of the Centurion Statue, its second image was the Claremont class shot & its third was the city as seen from the bridge, with the centurion statue being front and centre... For us those images have become icons of Freedom City.

An it doesn't stop at Tellax, there's also things like Victory Squadron image.... Instead of every character getting an image, or there being a dynamic group shot, what we get is a picture of a picture of a group shot, at a terrible angle & to small to make out clear details from. Apparently a major part of the cities super heroic legacy wasn't quite as visually important in a super hero campaign setting book as a generic image of a shopping mall (an image that took up half a page).

NARRATIVE & INFORMATIVE CONTENT
An this misplaced zeal is not just evident in the artwork its also evident in the writing: The book goes into great depth on things like the commission on heritage buildings, it gives us entire multi paragraph write ups for unimportant government functionaries, entire side bars about business and industry (that made no point), but then gives us less than 4 lines per entry for any member of the Victory Squadron & no stats.

An that was one of the big issues with the book. The city has a major super event occur & that caused a jump in super powered individuals, but that's NOT what this book is about. This book focuses on the aspects of the city from BEFORE that happened & since the general concept was "a city without superheroes" all the villains in the book are from the "pretending we aren't really here" & "a conspiracy of secrets" type of characters, which is entirely to dull for a super hero game.

In comic book terms, this is like creating a source book for the city of Dakota from the Milestone universe, where instead of mentioning Icon or Static, or the Big Bang, I instead presented you with a book that went into great detail on who the fire chief is & whose obsession is preserving the local park.

An yet that's exactly what Emerald City presented us with.

MODULES
This brings us to the modules, which I'm going to keep short. While high on style, they are short on content: There are just to many instances of non-consequence encounters, failing upwards, not enough story links between modules, players not being able to make any meaningful choices (its completely passive, rather than active), atleast one of the modules is predicated entirely on players making a single choice players might not make & no alternative if they don't make it & finally, way to many incidences of scene transitions being nothing more than "and then a villain shows up where you are to fight you."

The upside to the modules is that the art & writing is less airy-fairy, which is good, but the down side is that the maps look rough & constantly forgot to add any kind of scale, so you can't tell if a building is a flat 1 story building with a roof top that's 100 feet long, or if its a 40 story building that is 60 feet long.

CONCLUSION
So in conclusion this product as a whole has some major issues, issues that could have been minimised entirely in this humble readers estimation by having a single well defined artistic vision of what they wanted the city to be, rather than a list of things they wanted it NOT to be. An then when that was achieved, a solid guiding hand by an editor, overseeing the entire project. Because this book reads more like someone had a rough idea, didn't flesh it out & told a whole group of people to go write articles about this new city, which then got meshed together to form an ill defined city narrative.

An if I can make an observation on the art side: Stop ordering art before you know what art you are going to want & how you plan on setting it out. This has been an issue with a lot of your recent output: You end up with 60% of your artwork being b-roll, 47% being "character jumping from no where" group shots & the last 3% being of new things that people would actually want to see images of.... You need to invert the amount of "things we actually want to see" with the "b-roll" amount.

Sorry guys, as much as I love your system & your universe in general, this book was below par.
