About the Author
Meenakshi Mukerji (Adhikari) was introduced to origami in early childhood. She rediscovered origami in its modular form as an adult quite by chance in 1995. This newfound mathematical and structural side of modular origami rekindled her passion for the art, and soon after, she started designing and displaying origami on her popular website origamee.net.

In 2005, OrigamiUSA noticed Meenakshi's work and presented her with the Florence Temko award. In April 2007, her first book Marvelous Modular Origami was published followed in quick succession by four more books. She has been a featured artist and special guest at many origami conventions both in the USA and abroad. Although known for modular designs, she has published a book of her single sheet works as well. Meenakshi regularly contributes to various origami journals and exhibits her work as well. She is a member of Origami USA and British Origami Society, and an editor for OrigamiUSA’s online magazine, The Fold.

Born and raised in Kolkata, India, Meenakshi obtained her BS in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and a MS in computer science from Portland State University, Oregon. She worked as a software engineer for more than a decade. She is now at home in California devoting her time to family, designing and authoring origami and, of course, spreading the joy of origami.

The new volume for modular-fans

This book is the second part of the author's bestselling 'Exquisite modular origami' book. It has instructions for 25 new beautiful models of Meenakshi Mukerji and 3 models of the guest authors: Unia Filonova, Narong Krimed and Natalia Romanenko.

The book begins with the picture index, seasoned with difficulty levels, paper shape and the number of units needed for the particular model. The difficulty level varies from simple to advanced. There are eight six-unit cubes and octahedrons, one twelve-unit dodecahedron, seventeen thirty-unit balls and one gorgeous 60-unit model. So the reader has a great choice from the different difficulty options and time needed to finish the complete model.

Among the most tasty models in the book I'd name the heart cube (it's always good to have one for the Valentine's day), 'Compound of 5 tetrahedrons' - the modular with an amazing and fascinating shape and Frangipani model (Natalia Romanenko) with very nice and natural colour change.

Wow very exciting Modular Origami Volume 2 has so many terrific variants some of which have moving parts or changing parts. This is a terrific book with a large variety of shapes & designs. Lots of pictures and step by step instructions.

A great book that will keep your hands busy for hours!

There is a wide variety of different kinds of models in the book - from cubes and octahedrons to flowery balls and sonobes - so any origami folder will find something satisfying to make.
The detailed description in the beginning includes not only difficulty level for each project, ranging from Simple to Advance, but also paper recommendations (size- and colorwise) which I find very helpful.
As an additional bonus the book also features a few models by guest contributors - Natalia Romanenko, Uniya Filonova and Narong Krined. A great opportunity to learn about talented origami designers from different parts of the world!

Alien Sky picks up right where it needed to after reading ALIEN HUNTER. There are so many plots within plots that anything he wrote would be okay. But Arenson kept the story roaring along with suspense, adventure, romance and comedy. You can't help but love the main characters. Please tell me that there are more than 3 books in the series. I have preordered #3 and hope it comes out sooner rather than later.

I recommend this book for young adult, adult and seniors alike. I would recommend reading the books in sequence so you understand the story better.

KUDOS Mr. Arenson on another tale exquisitely told....keep writing.

Everything you need to know about this book

The book “...Isms Understanding Modern Art” by Sam Phillips is exactly how he himself describes it, “This essential guide to modern art explains all the key groups, styles, and schools that have shaped art from the late 19th century until today.” Phillips’ book can be understood by, informative to, and enjoyed by anyone. This book is somehow perfect for both the curious investigator to the experienced enthusiast.
Phillips has done something that I have never seen before; he somehow created a ‘introduction/how to use this book’ section that was interesting and very helpful. If you do read this book, read every page because Phillips gives every page meaning. Even the ‘glossary for useful terms’ was interesting to read. His writing style and use of interesting information and examples, seeps into all of his words.
The main body of the book informs the reader of different styles and genres of modern art in an interesting way. Every ‘ism’ has at least one picture example of the style. Each example shown is talked about in detail and is used to help the reader understand the style by using the example as a guide. With the body of the book being more informative than entertaining the format resembles that of a textbook. It does not feel like you are reading a textbook though, it just that it is so organized and helpful. Each section follows another in chronological order in history which shows you the evolution of modern art. The order also shows you how previous ‘isms’ influenced the following.
Phillips does a great job at, in a detailed yet understandable way, opening the reader’s eyes to each style of modern art. After reading each section I felt I understood the artist’s purpose and became connected with each ism. I wanted to find more modern art and identify the style and purpose after reading this book. I wouldn’t do this to seem smart or feel accomplished. This book makes you want to connect the art to its ism so you can fall in love with art that you may have walked by.
Overall, the book is not too informational as to be boring and blunt, yet is not too biased and uninformative as to sound informal and opinionated. I enjoyed reading it and I found the knowledge I gained from it not just beneficial but perspective changing. The book is not too long; it's only 157 pages. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, even those who dislike modern art. This book was enjoyed by one of my friends who is a modern art enthusiast, who recommended it to me, a person who disliked modern art. I started to read it because I was curious about the topic, but then I couldn’t stop because it was so interesting. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Untangle and Define Modern Art!

What a pleasurable way to untangle and define modern art movements! One can also see how one movement leads to another, how they overlap, what happens when rebels go off on their own. It's in my bathroom... frequent reference has strengthened my understanding of modern art and this truly enhances any museum lark upon which I embark. Get it.

About the Author
Frances Southwick, D.O. is a physician and non-fiction writer. Each step along her academic path, she has been inspired to write and share her experiences. Her work "Short Prose" was published in Spiritus Mundi, Colorado State University's Honors literary magazine. Her essay "How Patients Teach Their Doctors about Humanism in Medicine" was published the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Magazine. Her co-authored article entitled "Exploring Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy in an Elderly Patient with Acute Anxiety Attack" was published in the West Virginia Medical Journal. Most recently, her essay, "Jude Asleep" was selected for the upcoming volume of Voices from the Attic, a publication from participants in Madwomen in the Attic writing courses at Carlow, University. She earned her B.A. in philosophy from Colorado State University, her D.O. from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her family medicine residency training at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh. Her most recent work, Prognosis: Poor, is her memoir that addresses the medical training process in the U.S. Dr. Southwick practices family medicine with special interest in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA. She teaches family medicine residents at Shadyside Hospital and co-leads a Balint group for University of Pittsburgh medical students. She lives with her wife Judith Avers and their beloved three gray cats. By sharing her life experiences, she aims to give validation, hope and peace to those in similar circumstances.

Honest, bold, eye-opening - a TRUE account of what it is really like to be a medicine resident.

Simply put, I loved this book. I am writing this review from a Pharmacist perspective. Odd, right? I've worked at a Level I Trauma Center teaching hospital as the graveyard shift pharmacist for the last 7 years. I'm the one that gets the call at 02:00 AM from the desperate medicine resident who can't figure out how to order acetaminophen. I'm also the one that pages the intern on their 25th hour of call to let them know that they just entered a lethal dose of vecuronium into the computer system. If you "Google" my hospital's medical residency program, you'll see words like "malignant"; "tyranny", "intimidation". Let me just say, my hospital is nationally recognized. We are GOOD at what we do, and our expectation is to stay that way. BUT, I have seen first hand how poorly our medical/surgical residents are treated.
This book is a quick read and an imperative one for anyone considering becoming a doctor, going into/or currently in a residency program. Honestly, I've even recommended this book to my Pharmacist Interns that are considering a Pharmacist Residency and/or Fellowship. Dr. Southwick delves into subjects that no one else has really been brave enough to address - mental illness, suicide, extreme psychological stress. She does it SO WELL. She addresses the hard stuff and finds room to "keep it light". It is relatable even if you aren't in the medical field.
I hope this book ellicits change. I hope this book reaches a resident that just needs someone to tell them they are not alone. Right this moment, one of our medicine residents is admitted to my hospital for suicidal ideation. I am so glad someone finally had the courage to write about this aspect of residency training.

AllThat Glitters is Not Gold

For those who are contemplating a profession in medicine, this is a must read. Medical education is grueling physically and emotionally and financially expensive. For some, the cost may be too high. This biography, tells about one physician's journey in becoming a member of the The House of God. This book would be an excellent choice for a medical student or resident physician's book discussion group. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this biography and wish there were more resources to help those on this arduous journey of medical education. Thank you Dr. Southwick for sharing your story

A MUST READ!

As a person who has spent her career in higher education, I read this book with interest. The story has some similar themes for those pursuing a PhD or EdD. When posing questions to doctoral committees about what felt like unreasonable expectations, the common response to a student has been, "I had to do it this way....so you must too." And, sadly, very little has changed.

I think this book should be required reading for all individuals considering a career in medicine, and for the faculty who are responsible for their medical training. Students are human beings, first and foremost, and should, from my perspective, be treated as such. The demands that faculty and staff currently place on doctors is inhumane, leading to some very sad outcomes, as Dr. Southwick illustrated in this book.
If many many individuals read this book, perhaps we'll form a groundswell of support for change. Such would be my wish.

My thanks to Dr. Southwick for making time in your full schedule to write this book. I'm most appreciative.

LOVE IT!

This book made me wish I could have seen Ms. Primus dance. I yearn to view footage, view photos, immerse myself in the dance that claimed Ms. Primus. I love this book. It positions this legend properly. Revealing her humanness. The complexity of her character, and the world she lived in. It is really a great read. I learned so much. Am grateful for the care, the honoring, the global history that threads the story.

Dr. Pearl Primus: The Dance Claimed Me.

I gave this rating as I am the Nephew of Dr. Primus. I found the book very informative but I also found certain materials that didn't seem to be based in fact due to what I know of the family history on my Father's side who was her brother. I also feel that there were numerous intrusions of other voices that if you read carefully are marginal to Dr. Primus story. I would recommend the book to others in fact I am sending this copy to a friend in Japan who is interested in my Late Aunt's life. I am aware that there is a lot more material that is held by people about my Late Aunt and I am doing research to bring this information to light.

Inspirational!

This biography was tremendous! Peggy and Murray Schwartz truly loved writing about this amazing woman. A perfect marriage of academic inquiry and artistry. I loved reading about Pearl Primus' love of dance, love of African dance, and what it meant to her. The cover image alone should tell you that she had to have been an inspirational dancer. I really wish I could have seen her perform, but this book allowed me to envision her move, think, and feel. In reading this, I learned of Pearl Primus' courage, creativity, and intelligence.

Outstanding presentation. Excellent as a college text.

This book, Psychotherapy and Spirit, by Brant Cortright, is among the finest surveys of the field of transpersonal psychology. Any college professor seeking to teach this discipline would do well to examine this as a possible textbook. It treats the topic in clear articulate language, presenting in a balanced manner the sometimes opposing positions of Wilber and Washburn. The author presents the theory of transpersonal psychology as it evolved in the recent past, giving excellent synopsis of the contributions of Wilber, Washburn, Groff, Assignioli, Walsh and Vaughn, among others. The section on clinical issues is a significant contribution to the clarification of paths of spiritual growth and their therapeutic significance. The chapter on Spiritual Emergency builds on the work of Nelson (Healing the Split, 1990) and develops it with a view to psychoanalytic praxis. Anyone treating clients in a spiritual-psychological crisis will be grateful for the clear guidelines presented here. Having read many of the current books in the area, I feel that this is among the best

Great Book

Cortright has taken a psychotherapeutic perspective on transpersonal psychology and has done a great job. Perhaps some of the negative reviews of this book are grounded in him not idolizing Ken Wilber. Wilber is a theorist and not a therapist so what Cortright presents is grounded in truth. He does not attempt to dethrone Wilber however. The book is grounded in solid evidence and will be a contribution to anyone interested in the solid core of transpersonal psychotherapy. He also does a great job in reviewing some of the past transpersonal founders such as Roberto Assagioli.

a brave but flawed attempt at unifying transpersonal thought

Brant Cortright does a good job of surveying 3 decades of transpersonal psychology. He felt that it was high time to bring a critical perspective to this field and he has decided to spearhead it. There quite a bit of the textbook quality about it which one would expect from the Director of the California Institue of Integrative Studies. He does a great job of incisive writing without engaging too much in reductionism. I like his writing best when it was anectdotal.Stories about Maslow and Rinpoche really showed the difference between text and person and the imporatance of keeping them separate.The overall thrust of the book attempts to show how consciousness and spirituality are the keynotes in transpersonal psychology and practice. In the final analysis though Cortright sticks to the time honored schism of church and state when comparing therapist and priest. The only problem with this distancing of the therapist's spirituality is that Cortright does not define what a priest or minister actually does(besides the dognmatizing) compared to a transpersonal therapist. After criticizing psychiatry and its' pathological model, he ultimately hides behind a barrier of professionalism thus distancing himself from a deeper discussion of ethical and moral issues. He does this by becoming old fashioned and sensible around the values of tradition in psychiatry. "Most transpersonal therapists would not teach a client any spiritual philosophy much in keeping with standard therapeutic tradition." (p.221) He also singles out Psychosynthesis for some pretty dismissive commentary while holding up others like Hameed Ali. This is quite a serious contradiction but I'm sure that it reflects a bias deeper than he wants to share with us.So, after spending the whole book talking about spirituality as the cornerstone in the Fourth Force of Psychology, he warns that it is not possible really to integrate this in the real world. Workshps or retreats possibly but not your everyday third part covered therapy. That is where the spirit in "Psychotherapy and Spirit" fizzles. Too bad becasue for the most part it was a damned good read.
